Development of Highly Conductive and Corrosion-Resistant Cr-Diamond-like Carbon Films
Ko, Minjung,Jun, Yee Sle,Lee, Na Rae,Kang, Suhee,Moon, Kyoung Il,Lee, Caroline Sunyong The Korean Ceramic Society 2019 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.56 No.3
Cr-diamond-like carbon (Cr-DLC) films were deposited using a hybrid method involving both physical vapor deposition and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. DLC sputtering was carried out using argon and acetylene gases. With an increase in the DC power, the Cr content increased from 14.7 to 29.7 at%. The Cr-C bond appeared when the Cr content was 17.6 at% or more. At a Cr content of 17.6 at%, the films showed an electrical conductivity of > 363 S/cm. The current density was 9.12 × 10-2 ㎂/㎠, and the corrosion potential was 0.240 V. Therefore, a Cr content of 17.6 at% was found to be optimum for the deposition of the Cr-DLC thin films. The Cr-DLC thin films developed in this study showed high conductivity and corrosion resistance, and hence, are suitable for applications in separators.
Speciation of Arsenic from Soil Organic Matter in Abandoned Gold and Silver Mines, Korea
Ko, Il-Won,Kim, Kyoung-Woong,Hur, Hor-Gil The Korean Society for Applied Biological Chemistr 2008 Journal of Applied Biological Chemistry (J. Appl. Vol.51 No.1
Organic forms of arsenic (As) were determined through fractionation procedure of soil organic matter (SOM) in soil, sediments and mine tailing samples from the Myungbong, Dongil, and Okdong mining areas of southern Korea. An alkaline extraction method was applied to soil samples followed by the fractionation procedures of SOM by the DAX-8 and XAD-4 resin adsorption method. Major fraction of organic As species (42% to 98%) was found in acid-soluble fraction, whereas minor fraction (0.1 % to 67.8%) was present in the humic-associated As. In acid-soluble fractions, the transphillic- and hydrophilic-associated As were dominant in addition to As binding with humic and fulvic SOM. Arsenic binding was the strongest between pH 6 to 8 and reduced to about 70% at both low and high pH regions. The amount of both transphillic and hydrophillic associated As was less changed than humic and fulvic-associated As, in both low and high pH regions. This apparently indicates that As has stronger affinity towards hydrophillic rather than hydrophobic organics. From the experimental observation of As-binding SOM in natural soil, the ligand exchange model may be a feasible explanation of transphillic and hydrophillic affinity of As.

The biodegradation rate of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil was evaluated by the effect of temperature variation through bioaugmentation and biostimulation. In this study, biokinetics of batch-, pilot-, and field-scale biodegradation were performed by the optimization of enhanced biodegradation, minimizing the inhibitory effects of seasonal variations such as the rainy and cold winter seasons. From the relationship between remedial timescale and initial concentration, the biokinetic isolines of the biodegradation were smaller in the winter than those in the other seasons. The scale-up of biodegradation process led to enhance its activation energy, and then the field-scale remedial action should be performed in the way to lower the activation energy from the chemical diffusion and microbial activation. Therefore, a remedial or field worker can obtain the remedial timescale from the given apparent data of biokinetics with respect to initial TPH concentration only after the simple remedial investigation.

Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the dialysate MCP-1 (dMCP-1) and systemic inflammatory and nutritional markers in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. In addition, we examined the prognostic value of dMCP-1 on all-cause or cardiovascular mortality in these patients. Methods: We prospectively followed 169 prevalent PD patients from April 1st 2008 to December 31st 2012. At baseline, dMCP-1 and serum biochemical parameters including high sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) and albumin were checked. All-cause mortality and cause of death were evaluated during the follow-up period. Based on the median level of dMCP-1, patients were classified as either low or high dMCP-1 groups. Results: Mean age, hs-CRP, and D/Pcr ratio at 4 h were significantly higher, while serum albumin levels and %lean body mass (LBM) were significantly lower in the high dMCP-1 group. During the mean follow-up period of 47.7 months, all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality rate were significantly higher in the high dMCP-1 group (9.6 and 6.3 per 100 person-years, respectively) compared to the low dMCP-1 group (5.1 and 3.1 per 100 person-years, respectively; p = 0.021, 0.038). In multivariate Cox analysis, high dMCP-1 was a significant independent predictor of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio: 1.83, 95% confidence interval: 1.03-3.24, p = 0.039). Conclusions: dMCP-1 levels are closely correlated with nutritional and systemic inflammatory markers in PD patients. In addition, increased dMCP-1 is significantly associated with higher all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. These findings suggest that local peritoneal inflammation could contribute to poor clinical outcomes in PD patients.

© 2014 S. Karger AG, Basel

Objective : To evaluate the clinical outcome of coil embolization for unruptured intracranial aneurysm (UIA) with oculomotor nerve palsy (ONP) compared with surgical clipping. Methods : A total of 19 patients presented with ONP caused by UIAs between Jan 2004 and June 2008. Ten patients underwent coil embolization and nine patients surgical clipping. The following parameters were retrospectively analyzed to evaluate the differences in clinical outcome observed in both coil embolization and surgical clipping : 1) gender, 2) age, 3) location of the aneurysm, 4) duration of the symptom, and 5) degree of ONP. Results : Following treatment, complete symptomatic recovery or partial relief from ONP was observed in 15 patients. Seven of the ten patients were treated by coil embolization, compared to eight of the nine patients treated by surgical clipping (p = 0.582). Patient's gender, age, location of the aneurysm, size of the aneurysm, duration of symptom, and degree of the ONP did not statistically correlate with recovery of symptoms between the two groups. No significant differences were observed in mean improvement time in either group (55 days in coil embolization and 60 days in surgical clipping). Conclusion : This study indicates that no significant differences were observed in the clinical outcome between coil embolization and surgical clipping techniques in the treatment of aneurysms causing ONP. Coil embolization seems to be more feasible and safe treatment modality for the relief and recovery of oculomotor nerve palsy.
