Conscription in Denmark and South Korea : the merits of a volunteer military system
Petersen, Jarl Alexander Korea University 2019 국내석사
South Korea currently faces a demographic crisis that will in the near future undercut its ability to adequately retain its current conscription troop levels in its military. Due to the aging population and the low birth rate of the country, it is doubtful that the military can reach the 690,000 troops previously deemed necessary for the defense of South Korea. Combined with political promises of a reduction in the length of conscription, the time for South Korea to critically evaluate its conscription system has come. Other OECD countries have in many cases made the switch from a conscription-based military, to a volunteer based one and experienced positive results. Examples such as the US, the UK and other western countries have shown that the era of conscription-based armies are rapidly coming to an end. This thesis argues that a professional military is in many cases superior and specifically focuses on three major areas: economic, societal and combat effectiveness. By examining these three key areas and comparing the South Korean military with the Danish military within these areas, it is possible to provide a guideline that would be suitable for South Korea and would allow it to cope with its future tasks more efficiently than currently.
