The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship among mother's rearing attitudes in infancy, children's self-concept and the relationship with friends in childhood longitudinally. In order to ascertain the causal relation among the mother's rearing attitudes in infancy, children's self-concept and the relationship with friends in childhood, linear structural relation analyses were performed.
Materials for this study are part of things called 'A Longitudinal Study of Korean Children' that Korean Institute for Research in the Behavioral Science(KIRBS) has collected since 1975, specifically adopted from 3 to 11 full years' ones. In addition, as materials for analysis, I made an use of mother's rearing attitudes examined when 3 and 6 full years old each, testing tool for children's self-concept measured by children themselves when 7 and 10 full years each, and testing tool for the children's relationship with friends when 9, 10 and 11 full years.
Through the whole study, I obtained such results as following.
First, as a result of examing mother's rearing attitudes, children's self-concept and general tendency of the children's relationship with friends, we could find significantly differences according to the sex in the area of mother's rearing attitudes and children's self-concept, but we could not find in the area of children's relationship with friends.
Second, as a result of examing mother's rearing attitudes, children's self-concept, correlation of relationship with friends according to the age, we could get the result in which children's self-concept in the age of 9, mother's rearing attitudes and children's self-concept in the age of 10 and mother's rearing attitudes in the age of 11 have the significantly correlation with the relationship with friends.
Third, mother's rearing attitudes in infancy directly influenced the relationship with friends in childhood. But children's self-concept did not significantly influence the relationship with friends in childhood. Also, mother's rearing attitudes did not significantly influence the children's self-concept. So children's self-concept appeared not to mediate the relation between mother's rearing attitudes in infancy and the relationship with friends in childhood.
Summarily above results, it's implied that mothers' rearing attitudes in infancy can be consequential enviromental variable factors, and children's self-concept don't playing an essential intermediate role between mothers' rearing attitudes in infancy and the relationship with friends in childhood.
And through this results, we need to regard mother's rearing attitudes in infancy is the most influential factors for the relationship with friends in childhood.
This study is using a kind of newly attempted method in the field of Human Development in Korea that has never tried to vary methods' for longitudinal analysis.
Besides this, clarifying validity of the model of the structural equation by analyzing it, this study can be helpful to make an real understanding for development of the relationship with friends in the childhood and relevant variables.
The methodology used in this study, specifically the linear structural relation analysis, demands a relatively large number of cases in order to deal with an adequate number of variables. This requirement was not properly met in this study and, therefore, it was suggested that future study of this kind should look into this aspect more closely.
