This study was performed to make a positive analysis of the present condition of injury sustained on duty of the korean police, and to develope reform measures to prevent injury of officers on the line of duty.
For this purpose, 647 injury cases of the korean police officers sustained on duty in 1997 were statistically analyzed with 11 variables. Variables were consisted of 6 main variables; such as 「rank」, 「region」, 「rage」, 「years of continuous service」, 「function」, 「division of position」 and five subsidiary variables such as ; 「cause of injury」, 「type of service」, 「length of medical treatment」, 「time of injury」, 「negligence as a cause of injury」.
Among the variables, it was available to get six main variables' distribution data of all korean police officers, and these six main variables were used for analysis. This study compared actually injured groups with expected groups by variables. The expected groups that could be assumed to be injured were decided considering the ratio of total number of police officers by variables. Actually injured groups and these expected groups with same variables were compared with each other and x^(2) test method was used to find out any meaningful differences between them.
According to the results, each of the 6 main variables showed positive meaningful differences, and this results were used as a theoretical basis of the idea that different measures to prevent injury should be developed according to the variables. That is the probability of injury was different according to the rank, region, age, years of continuous service, function, division of position, and the preventive measure should be developed considering this probability of injury.
In this study the development of different protective measures by the variables were suggested as a theme for the further study, but showed that probability of the injury that the police officers faced on the line of duty in 1997 was more than 2.7 times higher than other government officers. By this special characteristics of police work, this study claimed that the government(employer) should give a compensation to the police officers as a form of danger money or raising salary, and also the amount of compensation should be decided according to the probability of injury that is differentiated by the function or division of position. 'The special compensation system for the injury sustained on duty, of Japan was suggested as a model of actual plan that can be adopted in Korea.
