The purpose of this study is to investigate psychological factors associated with bullying, tendency to bully, and tendency to be a bully victim. Bullying has emerged as a major social problem recently. This paper studies how these three aspects of bullying correlate with ways parents bring up their children, presence of anger as emotional factor, expression of anger as a behavioral factor, and dysfunctional belief system as a cognitive factor.
This paper studied a group of 832 middle school children both boys and girls in the city of Seoul. Each of the children filled out a questionare asking them about their experiences with bullying and various aforementioned factors associated with bullying.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, bullying, tendency to bully, and tendency to be bully victim correlate positively with parents' nonpermissive attitude toward their children, presence of anger in the child, ways child expresses, restrains, suppresses anger, and dysfunctional belief system in the child.
Second, children were able to be categorized into four distinct groups: bully only group, victim only group, dual bully-victim group in which they were both perpetrators as well as victims, and control group. The first three groups with bully experience had much more unpleasant and negative experiences with their childhood upbringing and had much higher incidence of anger and resentment than the control group.
As far as difference in the expression of anger, bully only group and victim only group tended to express anger more frequently than the other groups. The dual bully-victim group tended to suppress anger more than other groups. Victim only group tended to restrain their anger more than bully only group or bully-victim group.
As far as difference in dysfunctional belief negative self-esteem was most prevalent in the victim only group and the dual bully-victim group and uncompromising fixed attitudes and beliefs in the dual bully-victim group. Excessive desire for recognition by others were higher in the dual bully-victim group than the victim only group.
Over all the dysfunctional belief system was most prominent and prevalent in the dual bully-victim group.
Third, the dual bully-victim group showed higher tendency to bully than the bully only group and higher victim tendency than the victim only group.
Fourth, bully tendency was explained by anger expression methods, uncompromising fixed attitudes and beliefs, and presence of anger.
Victim tendency was explained by negative self image, nonpermissive parental attitude toward their children, and suppression of anger.
In summary bullying tendency and tendency to be bully victim arose from a similar set of factors. Bully only group had higher and more frequent expression of anger. Victim only group had more suppression of anger and more negative self image. The dual bully-victim group had higher incidence of dysfunctional belief and higher tendency to be a bully and victim of bullying. More research is needed to clarify these issues.
