    The purpose of this study is to investigate the syntactic and vocabulary development of the mentally retarded. The subjects were 111 mentally retarded students.
    The vocabulary was collected by hand-writing at home and school. Of the transcribed language samples, 1, 456 utterances were selected. When we analyzed the basic words in the vocabulary for the mentally retarded students. The total numbers of words were consisted of 3,126 words and 3,449 morphemes.
    The results of this study were as follows;
    The vocabulary of the mentally retarded students was increased by the new vocabulary, and particularly increased at the age of 6 in the mental age and the age of 10 in the social age.
    The time vocabulary of the mentally retarded students was not acquired at an earlier period than the normal children.
    The mentally retarded students did not acquire place vocabulary earlier than the normal children.
    The ratio of the noun and verb class words is gradually decreased by the mental age of 3-5 and the social age of 7-10 when we compare with the adjective and adverb class words in the vocabulary, therefore it showed a gradual increasement. As the results, the ratio of the class words of the adverb, adjective and others showed the contrary tendency as the above mentioned.
    These results shall be helpful to devise the organization of the language curriculum which is relevant to the teaching method of the mentally retarded students.
