The Korean literary history examining the linguistic and aesthetic aspects of Korean literature started in the 1930s, and its main focus has been on the modernism, including Jung Ji-Yong's poetry, and its aesthetic planning. In this context, the purpose of this thesis is to analyze Jung's poetic terms and put them in proper place to reveal his intention clearly through the rhetorical analysis of his poems.
Exploring Jung's aesthetic strategies for choosing some poetic terms when writing poems demands highly-sophisticated training. This thesis focuses on revealing the agreement between the modernist aesthetic principles and Jung's linguistic aesthetics, and arguing that we need to explore his uses of words which are often ignored by critics. As a result, in this thesis, I show that how clearly Jung can produce deeper meanings by using simple Korean words and sentences without depending on Chinese abstract words.
For this study, I choose two key words 'Nuri(egg)' and 'Ryuson(flowing lines).' "Nuri" is often considered one of Jung Ji-Yong's best poems, but it has produced diverse views. "Rhyson" is a poem showing a change in Jung's literary style, but its difficulty leads us to think of it as an inaccessible poem. I focus on how both words work aesthetically in his poems.
In this study which I examine Jung's poetic terms, the reasons I first choose the word 'Nuri(egg)' are as follows: first, to interpret his excellent poetic accomplishment of each poem containing "Nuri."; second, to explore his strategies for transforming poetic words in both form and meaning at his disposal; third, to identify some mistakes produced by critics who often exclude the intrinsic structure of poetic meanings in the process of writing poems; and then to interpret some important poems which are often misunderstood by some critics.
"Sadness on Flowing Lines," which is considered a difficult or frivolous poem, can be a turning point to show the change of interpretation in his works. 「유선애상」 is a tacit, bitter advice to the poetry painted with ideology and sentimentality as well as a poetic prayer telling that creative personality could lead literary accomplishment earlier than others. Therefore, I try to explore the word 'flowing lines 유선' by examining its historical background, dynamic structure, and symbolic technique.
In conclusion, Jung Ji-Young's poetic significances in the history of modern poetry are as follows: first, Jung's linguistic sense and use of words are unique in the literary history; second, his use of words shows his talent for perception and poetic sensibility; third, he tried to discover archaic words and used them in his poems, warning stereotyped uses of poetic words; fourth, he tried to show symbolic meanings of Chinese characters and some coined words and dynamic poetic words; sixth, his use of words shows a criterion by which we can appreciate other poets' poems; and finally, his use of words becomes a poetic model for Korean lyrical poetry.
