The origin of Korean Popular Song starts from the Japanese colonial period in the 1920s, which is called an enlightenment period. During this period, New Folk Song or 'Shinminyo(新民謠)' was born based on traditional Korean folk song, while the so-called Trot Song came into being on the basis of 'Yenka(演歌)' which was used in Japanese modern drama. In fact, Shinminyo and Yenka formed a representative genre in the beginning stage of Korean Popular Song. Then, the inflow of American culture and various Western popular music affected the identity of Korean Popular Song.
As a well-known popular singer, I have been singing for over 40 years on various performance stages with the mission and philosophy that I have to develop great elements of traditional music into today's popular song. Recently, however, I have been faced with a lot of difficulties due to the rapid modernization, commercialization and capitalistic trend of the local pop music world. This study, based on my experience, is designed to review the transition of Korean Popular Song and to present the desirable headway of its future.
First, we focus on analysis of and comparison between Shinminyo and Trot Song. Second, we try to find out the transition of Shinminyo which changed from a traditional style to modern popular style. We also try to unveil how a musical genre, introduced from the outside, has somehow developed into Korean Popular Song. Third, we present alternative ideas for establishing the identity of Korean Popular Song and its universal settlement as a world-class song.
Now, let's take a look at the key points of this study.
First, Korea's traditional folk songs and Japanese popular songs are composed of the so-called 'Pentatonic Scale.' However, these two songs are totally different in terms of the mood and melodies. The evidence is that such features are reflected on Shinminyo and Trot Song, respectively.
Second, the transition of Shinminyo and Trot Song can be classified largely into the following four periods according to their musical analysis and social background.
    ◁표 삽입▷(원문을 참조하세요)
Third, I put forward alternative ideas for the development of "Korean Popular Song" based on musical analysis of its transitional results and 40 years of my singing career. The ideas can be classified into the following assertions: (1) the revival of tradition and change of general recognition; (2) creation of popular music and the change of its production structure; (3) reform-minded performances by both singers and players; (4) the need for changing attitudes on the part of the audience and the general public. These points of issue must be recognized by everybody so that singers and audiences can duly retain traditional elements and pursue creative production.
My efforts will be continued to present the right direction of Korean Popular Song and to achieve its globalization through continued research on music and creative singing performances on the stage.
