It seems that the origin of the modernism literature started from "self - crisis', which was promoted by the anxiety about the rapidly changing world, the collapse of the progressive view of history after both world wars and materialism accelerated by capitalism. It is self - crisis that is expressed in modem literature.
Focusing on this respect, we propose to examine the view of world in Modernism and modem features which will be revealed in the play. Strictly speaking, the study on prior plays stressed only the estimation of modernity and didn't examine what aspects of modernity are and what is achieved by.
In short, it is sure that the method to embody 'the modernity' was not proper. This study will be done from the view that it is needed to illustrate the modern aspect based on the writer's phase which distinguishes contemporary writers and, at the same time, to interpret and appreciate the achievement of the play
In this study, the range of modernist plays in the 1960s extends from Lee geun-sang (manuscript paper) to Park jo-yeul (흰둥이의 방문). This range's basis is what I was convinced that the modern play sprang up from the former and then was ripened by the latter.
Although it is anticipated that some people will have different views, through this study I hope that the studies in this area can reach their potential by being studied more actively
The procedures of this study is as follows. In the second chapter, we first handl the concept and aesthetic features of Modernism for analysis of the play and also summarize the developing procedures which have revealed in Korean plays. In the third chapter, as the most important part of this study, we will analyse the view of world in modern plays and the features in the modernity of the 1960s
As a method of studying, we will extract the characteristics which might be considered as a category of modernism through western modernism trends and we will focus on the features of modernistic views of world and formal characteristics which this work seeks to achieve.
In the forth chapter, on the basis of the analysis of the third chapter we will examine the characteristics and phases of modernism in the 1960's In the final, concluding chapter, we will discuss the prospects of the modernist plays and potential achievements of this study.
Through this analysis modernist plays in the 1960s will be examined for its distinguished originality in that it portrays irrationality of existing human beings, unconsciousness and unreasonable world when most of the Korean writers just remain in the realm of realism which critically depicted the contradictory times. Not only in the formulated characteristics, but also from the point of view of uniformity of experience which is made during psychological times
Through this analysis it is sure that play writers in the 1960s were modern writers who realized with the confidence which new art would be inspired from the unconsciousness and the unreasonable world. 'Modernism' itself means a confusing phenomenon which the view of the world is collapsed and conflicted. It is expressed as a synthesis of the most contradictory and a unification of conflicting styles.
