柳致眞의 戱曲 '소'硏究 = (A) Study on Yu Chee-Jin's Drama 'So'

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Yu Chee-Jin is one of dramatists who contributes to the development of drama literature and play from the movement of Korean modern drama to that of present drama. The work of 'So' is his First long drama and gave him an opportunity which raised him in the secure position of a dramatist. Therefore, this essay took his work 'So' as the object of study.
Because drama has the dual aspects of literature and drama, this essay tried to analyze this work from the dual point of view by approaching dramatic method to the characteristic of the work as drama literature. The conclusion extracted from the study will now is as follows:
First, Unlike the drama with basic five-phase construction, 'So' consists of six-phase construction-introduction, development, crisis, reversal, climax and catastrophe. These phases are divided by taking ox and its being taken as the central object. Crisis phase plays a role of semiclimax.
Compared with basic phase of construction, the order of reversal and climax is reversed and reversal phase came to proceed the climax. This emphasizes more and more the tragic aspects of climax and catastrophe. From this point of view, it must be said to be a successful work in the construction.
Second, This essay may take Kook-Seo, Kae-Tˇong, Mal-Tˇand Sa-Eum as the examples of main characters in 'So' Kook-Seo and Kae-Tˇong turn typical characters into individual characters. From the beginning of this drama, Mal-Tˇong shows individual character, and a series of his actions show the orderly reinforcement of his character from the psychological change to the behavioral change. Sa-Eum is a typical character and he presents circumstantial grounds at the same time and plays a role indicating strongly the individuality of Kook-Seo, Kae-Tˇong and Mal-Tˇong, as well. As a whole, the personality creation of characters in 'So' contributes to the intention this work presents.
Third, This essay analyzed speeches by six criteria. As the result, the controversial points in condensation, persuasive power, and concentration were exposed as weak-points. On the other hand, the revelation of person's character, artistic expression in this work.
Fourth, Moon-Jin's farcical expression compels laughters and cuts the stream of this drama. As the result, it prevents this work from revealing tragic aspects. Because songs and farm music play contrast with tragic situation, they deepen tragic aspects more and more. Therefore, the proportional expression on these is as follows:
'The year of abundance(Richness) : the collapse of farming community = Song, dance and farm music play: tragic situation'
Fifth, From the view-point of charging reality, this work describes farming community which loses everything by the loss of ox. The condensed wrath of being taken is thrown at opposing objects and is reflected as the action of burning his landlord's granary. This can be regarded as farmers' sad scream and Mr. Yu's spirit of resistance.

If literature expresses the human thoughts and emotion of the days, a writer takes his responsibility for observing and recording the human features of the epoch sincerely. The characteristic of the work Mr. Yu shows through his work 'So' raises several points, but it is a masterpiece representing 1930s' judging from the circumstances in drama and play history.
