During his entire lifetime, Ernest Hemingway tried to portray the grave matter of life and death through his writings. He enormously experienced the real fields of struggle and hardship personally. Among his works, The Old Man and the Sea is a novel of the life process and of how we can meet with this difficulty in our own lives.
In The Old Man and the Sea, his view of life is made affirmative in defiance of the pessimism of the lost generation as portrayed in his early works. In this novel, Hemingway shows undefeated spirit against the forces of nature and expresses the sincerity in life, an attitude which a man should cultivate throughout his life, in spite of hardships and difficulties.
This thesis is an attempt to examine man's undefeated spirit in The Old Man and the Sea. The second chapter attempts to show Santiago's indomitable stoicism. Throughout The Old Man and the Sea, the protagonist Santiago has attained the living philosophy of man's undefeated spirit. He is an old man who fishes alone in a skiff in the Gulf stream and he has spent eighty-four days without taking a fish. After seeing a great marlin, he fights him with excellent skill and endurance, showing what a man can do and what a man endures.
The third chapter attempts to show his undefeated spirit through Christian symbols. The undefeated spirit of the old man may be compared to the ordeal of crucified Jesus. But he seems to be a simple man rather than a real Christian. He says, "I am not religious" and prays to God for help mechanically only if he faces a crisis. But by using Christian symbols, Hemingway tries to sublime his undefeated spirit.
In the fourth chapter attempts to show some elements of mental consolation and faith to him. Santiago depends on the young boy, Manolin, as well as his other friends in his village. His undefeated spirit is also reinforced by several symbols like a DiMaggio, lions and some birds. They pervade all and sustain Santiago's undefeated spirit.
Santiago is a valiant man who has the courage to try again and again in the face of great danger. His undefeated spirit engages our mind and teaches us a plain but great lesson of courage. In conclusion, for any one who wants to build up his own unique life philosophy in this world of confusion and difficulties, this novel will serve as a meaningful guide.
