李淸俊 小說 硏究 : 시간 구조를 중심으로 = A study on Lee, Cheong-Jun's novels

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Cheong-jun Lee published his first novel Leaving the Hospital - a short story in 1965. With steady and energetic activity, he wrote about 180 novels for 30 years until 1995 - the present time. There is many criticisms and arguments about his novel and his winning of many great prize in literature shows his novels are considered as one of the most important works in Korea. Leaving the Hospital - a short story, lo-Island - a medium length story and Your Paradise - a long novel are selected as the main texts of this treatise. Looking the time structure of the novel, the relation between the theme and the time represented by past, present and future was investigated.
Leaving the Hospital can be divided into the time of escaping and th time of overcoming. Io-Island consists of time of leaving and returning. The time-structure of Your Paradise can be divided into betrayal and reconcilation. The time of escaping, leaving and betrayal means the characters lose their believes of their ego, the world and future. That can be represented as the reverse of time. On the other hand, Time of overcoming, returning and reconciliation is revealed at the end of the novel in which the characters overcome the past and recovers the vision of their ego, the world and future. Here, the arrow of time turnes from the cycle of the regression to the future.
The relation between the structure of time and the pattern of space is also investigated. The space in Lee's novels shows three patterns: The closed space → the escaping space → the open space. Those correspond to the time-structure: The reverse of time → the break of time → the normal stream of time, respectively.
First, the closed space is the symbol of the past, in which the pressure of the past is replayed and the characters lose their identity and wander the frustrated and deceived circumstances. Second, the characters in Lee's novel choose the escaping space for the means of exiting the real world. The time of the escaping space loses the meaning as time. They watch back their ego in the escaping space and develop new recognition about the world. They return to their ordinary life at last. their returning to the ordinary life means the reconciliation with the past and adaptation to the real world. The place they returned, therefore, can be considered as the open space in which their ego is connected to the real world.
Further research should be accomplished for the Lee's other works and the remained problems.
