    Dong-Rang, Yoo, Chi-Jin worked as a dramatist, a producer, a play critic, and a play educator and so forth. He worked in all parts of the theater production, writing, and critique in Korea. He worked almost thirty years and wrote around 37 works of drama.
    He was a pioneer in the history of Korean modern drama and endures suffering a difficult time in the history of Korean's modern drama. So his relative importance is great. These, the study historical plays help us to understand the stream of historical plats during those times.
    Real historical plays have to deal with the past which are not just a subject matter, but are concerned with the present and treat the meaningful history by recreating the playwright's historical consciousness. In addition, the study of his historical plays are essential in examining the playwright's realities of life and the consciousness of history.
    Therefore, this thesis analyzes his historical plays and theatrical works in the point of view of historical consciousness.
    Generally described his works are realism, his historical plays took part in the widely a bridge of his early historical plays and the last historical plays.
    He changed his style from realism to historical playwriting in order to criticize from the present through the past because of <cow (so)> plot. He chose historical playwritings to be free the suppression of Japan. His created his imagination in the present space and time of life.
    He was concerned about the reality of the present in his historical plays. He created historical plays to express his mind about the present. He wrote historical plays during the dark period of Japan's colonial rules and after liberation.
    It as his reason for writing historical plays.
    He wanted to criticize realism through history and enlightened educational plays through the recreation of history.
    There are two kinds of character created by playwright's consciousness in his historical plays.
    First, his historical plays during the Japanese colonial era show the sentimental- historical-consciousness of trying to escape from the censorship of Japan.
    Second, his historical plays after liberation show the sensitive-historical-consciousness of the political and social situation in order to enlighten and spread nationalism.
    This study analyzes Yoo, Chi-jin's historical consciousness. His historical plays are estimated very highly, because he expressed reflection of reality even though it was the era of prohibition.
    He wrote plays that show an inclination of escape from reality in 1930's. In 1930's, the Japanese suppressed Korean authors very strongly. His point of view is an escape from reality. But, he showed the enlightened historical consciousness of reality criticism of anti-Japanism, anti-foreign influence, and anti-consciousness in his playwritings after liberation and got the result by raising national consciousness.
    After liberation by Japan, he could freely express his ideology as nationalism. He especially he emphasized nationalism against foreign influence, the historical consciousness of nationalism involved anti-foreign influence, anti-communism, reconciliation, civilization and loyalty.
    In an upheaval era, from Japanese colonialism to liberation, his plays reflected realism and enlightened the people.
    He influenced the change from historical playwritings to enlightenment playwritings.
