This study is to interpret the Chinese short stories by Park, Ji-won (박지원) in relation to his life, his thoughts, and the social and economical changes and thoughts of those days. Considering his life and the changes in his thoughts, his stories should be divided into two terms, the former term and latter term. For the two stories in "Yeol-ha-il-gi (열하일기)" were written, more than 15 years after the nine stories in "Bang-kyeong-gak-oe-jeon (방경각외전)" had been written. In this time the changes of his life and thoughts are noticeable. Therefore this study is to make clear the changes of his thoughts and to find what is consistent in all his stories by comparing his former and latter stories and inquiring the differences of them.
The summeries of this study are as follows:
1. The criticism of the situations of those days is the main points. He focuses the criticism on the nobility who do not think of the interest (利) in persuit of justice (義) or get the interest by the wrong means in the name of justice. He presents a model of human who persues the interest faithfully and diligently. He criticizes the degradation of friendship and emphasizes the necessity of faithful friendship which is not for power, reputation and interest. But his criticism in this time is not active and not beyond the individual level, which has much to do with his attitude of life at that time.
2. In the latter stories, his criticism of the nobility becomes much stronger. He strongly criticizes the moral philosophers who play the hypocrite and the nobles without economic capability. He criticizes the falsehood of the class to which he belongs. This is the main parts of his literature.
3. His notion of justice and interest is enlarged more and more. Finally in his latter stories his thought that interest is more important than justice is developed into the government theory that wealth can solve the conflict in the realities of life. He shows the tendency of mercantilism and the political and economic statecraft.
4. He has the dual notion of China. Thinking that even the merits of barbarians should be taken for the national interest, he criticizes the nobility indulged in the moral justification, and obligation. He insists on receiving the civilization of China from the new point of view.
5. These changes can be made by the contact with the scholars of the positive school (실학파), particulary with Hong, Dae-yong (홍대용).
6. The subject matter consistent in his stories is the criticism for the nobility. At the base of the criticism, he has the incredulity about the theory of Justice (義) and interest (利).
