This study is aimed to propose an urban design scheme for YoKsam-dong area in Seoul. On the bases of an analysis of the innate correlation between the functional and the morphological structure ow some existing urban settlements in Seoul.
Eventual goal of this empirical study is to suggest an efficient way of urban land use planning is particular, and of urban design program in general.
This study consists ow five chapters :
Chapter1. Introduction.
This chapter describes the purpose, scope, and the method ow study.
Chapter 2. A. Review of the Precedent Programs of Urban Design.
· A definition of the concepts of urban design through a review of the literature published since the 80s.
· A definition of the general problems of urban design in Korea through an analysis of the urban design policies and practices established in the 80s.
Charter 3. An Analysis of Existing Urban Structure.
· On the basis of a survey of urban design theories, the scope and the concept of the design of urban spatial structure are suggested.
· Three survey areas are selected with respect to the degree of physical urban intervention in those areas; they are
-. Hwagok-dong area whose spatial structure has been formed with a lowest degree of physical intervention.
-. Yoksam-dong area to which urban design control has been applied after initial urban development.
-. Sanggye-dong area whose formation has been a direct result of an urban design scheme.
According to the investigation of the correlation between the land use patterns and the hierarchy of street intersections found in those study areas, the hypothesis of this study is introduced.
Charter 4. A Design of Urban Spatial Structure.
On the base of the findings of the chapter three, a way of restructuring of Yoksam-dong area is proposed; they include:
· A revision of zoning.
· A proposal of the prototypes of street blocKs.
Chapter 5. Conclusion.
· It is desirable that design of urban spatial. structure be preceded by the investigations into existing urban structure.
