In this thesis, the author purpose to analyze the semantic features about the Korean polysemy and synonymy to study its semantic structure.
In these twenty years, the progress in semantics has been so brilliantly made that its characteristic is transformed from the Structural Semantics to the Syntactical Semantics since the coming of Noam Chomsky, and furthermore it is mow divided Generative Semantics, Interpretative Semantics, Case grammar's Semantics and so on.
In the Korean language, although some studies on this subject has been progressed, even the Lexical Semantics Analysis is not yet sufficiently systematized
Accordingly the work on this field is urgently demanded. Therefore the author made an attempt at the analysis of semantic feature on polysemy in the word level and synonymy in the vocabulary level, and also through the associative relation of meanings, semantic features are expounded as follows:
In referring to the meanings derived from the principle meaning of polysemy, first of all, the author set up the principles of distinguishing between its generic meaning and polysemy.
┌Yes: Are there any possibility of covering all the area │ in the dimension?┬Yes-generic meaning
Is there any common dimension? │ └No-polysemy │
│
└No: -polysemy
In other words, the basis of distinction between polysemy and homonymy; the relation between the meanings of two words is follows:
1) The existing relation among shift, partial transfer, metaphoric transfer, metonymic transfer and reifying transfer is polysemy.
2) What is not in the relation of shift and transfer is homonym, if it were not for the semantic feature of the word.
3) In the case of not shift and transfer, what belongs to any other semantic field is homonym.
4) What belongs to the form class that is said to be of the semantic feature of the word is homonym.
Thus, the semantic features are analyzed upon deriving from polysemy, the intransitive verb, o-ru-da(rise) is "transfer (i-dong)" in its principle meaning. The function of which is expressed in sentence is diverse, so some features are made and summarized in diagram as follows:
┌continuance of transfer
┌ascending transfer┤
┌transfer of place┤ └reaching point
transfer ┤ └plane transfer
(i-dong) └transfer of situation
2 Synonym, upon studying the word function in the sentence is understood as the structures of ⒜ inclusion ⒝ overlapping ⒞ complementation and ⒟ contiguity and in conferring two synonym relations the opposite relations as subjective vs objective, total vs part, concrete vs abstract, reality vs sympathy, up vs down, animate vs unanimate and external condition vs internal condition could be analyzed.
Therefore as to the description of dictionary a simple circular definition should be sublated and the description based on such an analysis of concrete features is required.
3 There have been some psychological works on the associative relation of word, which is classified into what is paradiagmatic and what is syntagmatic: the former is of similarity the latter of contiguity. The development of honorific expressions in the Korean language is conspicuous, and the syntagmatic associative relation is very abundant.
Conclusion
The semantic structure of polysemy in the Korean language is variously derived from fundamental meanings and the pattern of S1, S2, S3....Sn is integrated in S.
Therefore, synonym has been found to have various distinctive features through the substitution test.
