In the preface of the second edition of 「religion within the Limits of Reason Alone」, Kant distinguishes his "second attempt" from his first attempt of religious philosophy to establish a rational faith. The "second attempt", as Kant says, is a work to dig out the elements of rational faith from revelational faith in history. Thus, I think there are limits in attempting to understand Kant's philosophy of religion on the base of moral rational faith alone, but we can see his philosophy of religion in essence only by trying to find out the forms of rational faith from historical faith as Kant did in his seond attempt.
Especially, he intends to reveal that key elements of Christian doctrine are not inconsistent with the rational faith conceived by himself, and I would like to say that the "second attempt", to find out the forms of rational faith from develpment of revelations in history, composes the core of Kant's philosophy of religion.
To prove my opinion is right, I should review how Kant seeked after the rational faith throughout his life and found out the elements of rational faith through real historical faith.
First of all, I looked into the Kant's first attempt to establish his rational faith. It is recommendable to look into Kant's national faith by dividing it into three stages.
Before the period of Critiques, Kant did not consider the limit of reason, but developed natural theology and ontotheology with emphasis on reason. He never yet thought of internal relation between rational faith and moral faith, or about the postulate concept required.
His writings on philosophy of religion in the pre-critical period were 「General Natural History and Theory of the Heavens」, 「A new Exposition of the First Principles of Metaphysical Knowledge」, 「On the Only Possible Ground for a Demonstration of God's Existence」.
In 「General Natural History and Theory of the Heavens」, Kant worked on how to reconcile the mechanical theory on the universe with the theory on the overall orders of the Creation. In 「A New Exposition of the First Principles of Metaphysical Knowledge」(Nova Dilucidatio), Kant introduced the ontotheological argument on the being of God. Here Kant argued that there is an uncoditionally intrinsic being which is prior to possibility of all things including itself, and that being is God. In 「On the Only Possible Ground for a Demonstration of God's Existence」, Kant continued this ontotheological argument. He distinguished the thinking method to reach the being of God with possibility on the ground from that to reach the concept of possibility with the being of God on the ground. Here he argued it was the only way to prove the being of God to reach the being of God with possibility on the ground. Man cannot deny the reality of possibility, but such reality is possible only with God.
In the critical period, Kant concentrated on exposing the limits of reason. Through critique of reason, he turned his course from the traditional speculative theology into moral theology. Here rational faith is embodied in the form of moral theology, especially by way of postulate thinking method. Among the works of philosphy of religion in the critical period, 「The Critique of Pure Reasorn」, 「The Critique of Practical Reasons」,「The Critique of the Faculty of Judgment」 are distinguished works. I think these three Critiques and 「Religion Within the Limits of Reason」 Alone have consistent thinking system, logical strictness and inner coherence. Also I think that the fundamental principle of the thinking system is the principle "from moral to religion". Around the cores of the principle "from moral to religion", Kant's rational faith extended and developed.
In 「the Critique of Pure Reasons」, Kant defined God as the ideal of goodness and secured the moral world as a concept of summum bonum.
The ideas of reason, acting to organize and unify the works of understanding, are principles to systematize experiences, and formal rules and heuristic devices as well. Among objects in the concept of reason are soul, world, and God.
Kant defined the reality of soul as the Paralogism of Pure Reason, the reality of the world as the Antinomy of Pure Reason, on the reality of God as the ideal of Pure Reason. These three ideas, Kant worked on in 「the Critique of Pure Reasons」, have characters which cannot be verified theoretically nor refuted and so they are not objects of theoretic study. Securing "freedom" by dissolving the third Antinomy among the four Antinomies related to the concept of "world", Kant was able to link morals and religion. In 「the Critique of Pure Reasons」, Karat made the fact clear that matter of faith could not be dealt theoretically.
In 「the Critique of Pratical Reasons」, Kant confirmed the three ideas for which he secured the possibility in 「the Critique of Pure Reasons」 as the postulate conception in order to validate steady binding fone of moral law, working on possible conditions of moral practice. Through the postulate theory, Kant confered the objective reality on the object-conceptions of reason, which were nothing but regulative ideas in 「the Critique of Pure Reasons」. But this was not in the dimensions of theoretical philosophy, but only within the practice of reason. Therefore, Kant's postulate theory follows the principle "from moral to religion" truly demanding the reality of immortality, freedom, God-existence as conditional proposition for the possible accomplishment of summum bonum as moral laws command. These facts show that moral philosophical elements of rational faith that are premised tacitly in 「the Critique of Pure Reasons」 are disclosed more certainly.
In 「the Critique of Judgements」, the moral theology putting emphasis on the concept of "purpose" is dealt with purposiveness in nature. Already Kant divided the concept of world into phenomenal world and noumenal world. Phenomenal world is ruled by the principle of causality. It is natural world. Noumenal world is ruled by the principle of the freedom. It is the moral world. Phenomenal world is theoretical one, and noumenal world is practical one. And then the living organism world cannot be explained easily by the principle of causality. Perhaps organic living world is both the world of causality and freedom, and we need reflective judgements in order to comprehend the purposiveness in nature. Kant thought it necessary to postulate the being of God to unify the phenomenal world and noumenal world, with regulative principle to comprehend the purposiveness in nature. In this process, Kant conjectured two ways of thinking; one is natural theology, and the other is moral theology. According to Kant, natural the logy is an attempt to reason about the ultimate cause and its characteristics from the physical purposiveness. Moral theology is an attempt to reason about the ultimate cause and its characteristics from the moral purposiveness. Kant says we can not reach the ultimate purpose of creation by the natural theology. It is at least a preperation for moral theolgy.
We can arrive at the ultimate purpose of creation only by the moral theology. From the conception of ultimate purpose of creation, we arrive at the kingdom of ends. The kingdom of ends is to be realized only under the rule of the original being. Here Kant's postulate thinking method is noted and the principle "from moral to religion" is applied to consistently and thoroughly.
I pursued also the rational faith in the works of his last years, specially 「On the Miscarriage of All Philosophical Attempts at Theodicy」, and 「Opus Postumum」.
「On the Miscarriage of All Philosophical Attempts at Theodicy」is dealing with some of the difficult problems encountered inevitably whenever believers seek reasoned justification in the ways of God's wisdom.
Kant said all theodicy attempted in philosophical method was not successful to answer logically and to satisfy morally. Kant mentioned two kinds of theodicy, doctrinal one and authentic one. The former never worked, but the latter has been admitted partially. Authentic theodicy takes as an example Job's attiude in the the Old Testament. Job did not put his morality on his faith but his faith upon his morality. 「On the Miscarriage of All Philosophical Attempts at Theodicy」 agrees exactly with the critical attitude at the traditional arguments for the being of God and postulates of God by the moral consciousness. The principle "from moral to religion" is applied to here.
In 「Opus Postumum」, Kant's rational faith comes up to the peak of maturity. According to Kant, God is the morally practical self-legislating Reason. The concept of God is not that of a substance existing independently of man's thought. The idea of God can be proved only through the duty-imperative. The mere idea of God is at the same time an evidence of His being. To think Him and to believe in Him is an identical act. God is morally immanent. Even Kant says that intelligible 'I' is God. 'I' and God are two but one, one but two. It does not mean the bankruptcy of rational faith but shows abyss of rational faith. The principle "from moral to religion" proceeds to integration of moral and religion.
Now let's examine the second attempt of Kant. Here he attempted to see how his rational faith is realized in history, specially in 「Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone」. Kant understood that historical faith is in the process of historical, social, church dimensions of rational faith. Kant's historical faith mentioned how the world of God as the Sovereign of the nature and moral law is realized in human history.
Kant's core conception in the 「Religion Within the Limits of Reason」 Alone is that of infinite progress. Kant's conception of progress is found easily also in his works of historical philosophy. To solve the problem of radical evil, Kant expands and transfoms the three postulate propositions, freedom, immortality, and God as proposed in 「the Critique of Practical Reasons」 into the collective and intersubjective dimensions.
The complete revolution in man's moral disposition is demanded to get out of radical evil and to proceed toward moral holiness. Autonomous actions for moral progress expand into the immortal Postulate of existential dimension and into the efforts of collective and social dimension. It is embodied by two kinds of transformation of the postulate of God-existence. One is the postulate of "The Kingdom of God on Earth" and the other is the postulate of "Grace Judgement." The former means autonomous efforts of subject of moral action to arrive at moral holiness. The former is the earthly transformation of the postulate of immortality. The latter functions to mean the postulate of God-existence. So Kant expands and develops the postulate theory and completes the Postulate faith in 「Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone」.
Finally, I would like to see critically whether Kant's attempts are successful. While I admit that the core principle of rational faith or the principle "from moral to religion" contributes to elevation of Christian morality, I would like to point out that the principle "from moral to religion"; -- with which Kant himself enhanced the role or function of religion, and especially unique interpretation of Christian theology; can not be applied to any religion or Christianity in general.
Kant's attempt to find forms of rational faith from the historical faith has limits to look through roots of historical revelational faith owing to the prism of rational faith. It exposes thorough contradiction at last between Kant's own philosophical religion theory and real historical faith. So rational faith Kant attempts to save moral law, namely basic scheme of moral religion, differs greatly from reality of historical Christianity. In conclusion, I think the censorship Kant went through at that time can be a landmark to view freshly the relation between rational faith and historical faith from the beginning.
