Tonghak(東學) is a Korean Religion found by Chóe Che-u(崔濟愚) in the 1860's. Chóe Che-u underwent a decisive religious experience on 5 April in 1860. After undergoing religious experience, he founded this new religion. The following year, after setting an outline of his religi-on, he began to engage in a missionary work to spread the religion. But he had to take refuge soon at a strange village to avoid the people's criticism. In deep meditation during this refuge, Chóe established more rationalized doctrines for his religion and launched a fullswing propaganda activities in 1862. But he was arrested in late 1863 by the government; because she misled the followers to believe the weste-rn Religion (西學=Roman Catholicism). He died a martyr in 1864.
The second generation high priest Chóe Si-hyōng(崔時亨) joined To-nghak in 1861. He learned the doctrines of Tonghak from Chóe Che-u. Following the martyrdom of his teacher in 1864, he went underground to avoid the arrest warrant. In 1871 he participated in the rebellion Yong Hae (寧海亂) by Lee Pil-jae(李弼濟), after which he went under-ground again. In the 1880's he collected and published the manuscripts left by his teacher as basic scriptures and doctrines for his religion.
to At the same time, he steadily propagated his teacher's doctrines many peoples. In the 1890's, he launched a struggle for the freedom of worship, a struggle which ultimately developed into an armed rebel-lion (東學亂). The rebellion failed, He went underground again, but he was arrested in 1898, and he died also a martyr in 1898.
The purpose of this study is to explain precisely the life and thought of Chóe Si-hyóng from 1861 to 1871. It's content consists of five chapter.
The first chapter deals with the problems of the studies on Chóe Si-hyong and describes the outlines of the studies on Chóe Si-hyóng up to the present.
In the second chapter, many recently discovered materials are exp-lained. They are categorized into two groups of which one is issued by Tonghak (after Chon dogyo 天道教) and the other by the government of Yi-Dynasty(朝鮮王朝), They differ from each other in their content.
The third chaper deals briefly with his biography. In his childhood he lost his parents and subsequently he lived in poverty. He was at one time employed by a papers manufacturer. In 1861, he joined Tonghak. According to the recently discovered materials issued by Tonghak, he won the confidence of the founder of Tonghak in 1863. But new mate-rial SuunHaengLok(水雲行録, Chóe Che-u's brief biography) provides a basis for doubt.
In the fourth part, the characteristic Tonghak thought of Chóe Si-hyong are introduced to understand his real thought. Generally speak-ing, his thought could be said to succeed the traditional thought of Tonghak, the thought of Chóe Che-u.
In last part, this study is the conclusion to the discussion.
