Science I(2) and Earth Science, the high school textbooks by the 5th curriculum were analyzed by Romey's method and analytic results were compared.
    Results are as follows :
    1. Science I(2)
According to the analysis of contents of the textbooks, the maximum index of student involvement is 0.16 in chapter II of textbook D, and the minimum of that is 0.02 in chapter III of textbook C and chapter IV of textbook H. The average indices of student involvement in each chapter of 8 different textbooks are 0.08, 0.10, 0.09, 0.08 and 0.05. in this case, the maximum index is in chapter II and the minimum indes in chapter V.
According to the analysis of figures and tables of the textbooks, the maximum index of student involvement is 1.00 in chapter IV of textbook G, and the minimum of that 0.00 in chapter III of textbook A and chapter IV of textbook B and chapter III of textbook C and chapter IV of textbook E and chapter V of textbook G.
The average indices of student involvement in each chapter of 8 different textbooks are 0.29, 0.25, 0.21, 0.25 and 0.14. In this case, the maximum index is in chapter I and the minimum index in chapter V.
According to the analysis of exercises of the textbooks, the maximum index of student involvemnt is 1.50 in chapter V of textbook B, and the minimum of that is 0.00 in chapter II of textbook H. the average indices of student involvemnt in each chapter of 8 different textbooks are 0.45, 0.23, 0.33, 0.25 and 0.31. In this case, the maximum index is in chapter I the minimum index in chapter II.
    2. Earth Science
According to the analysis of contents of the textbooks, the maximum index of student involvement is 0.15 in chapter I of textbook E, and the maximum of that is 0.00 in chapter IV o textbook j. The average indices of student involvement in each chapter of 7 different textbooks are 0.07, 0.06, 0.04 and 0.04 In this case, the maximum index is in chapter I and the maximum index in chapter III and IV.
According to the analysis of figrues and tables of the textbooks, the maximum index of student involvement is 0.67 in chapter I of textbook E, and the maximum of that is 0.00 in chapter IV of textbook A and chapter IV of textbook B and chapter II, IV of textbook C and chapter II, III, IV of textbook I and chapter I, IV of textbook J. The average indices of student involvement in each chapter of 7 different textbooks are 0.17, 0.21, 0.15 and 0.04. In this case, the maximum index is in chapter II and the maximum index in chapter IV.
According to the analysis of exercises of the textbooks, the maximum index of student involvement is 1.00 in chapter II of textbook E and chapter III of textbook G, and the maximum of that is 0.00 in chapter I of textbook J. The average indices of student involvement in each chapter of 7 different textbooks are 0.23, 0.32, 0.40 and 0.35. In this case, the maximum index is in chapter III and the maximum index in chapter I.
    3. The suitable student involvement index for inquiry learning should be over 0.40(Romey, 1968), but the indices shown above are below 0.40. Therefore, as a whole, it is considered that Science I(2) and Earth Science textbooks by the 5th curriculum are not suitable for inquiry learning. But, partly, ordering contents, figures and tables, and execrises index of student involvement is seen the progressiv etendency to 0.40. Therefore, figures and tables than contents, and exercises than figures and tables, and Science I(2) than Earth Science are more inquiring. And, according to the textbooks, or chapters, or contents, figures and tables, exercises, index of student involvement are partly higher than 0.40. There would be the possibilty of raising the index value of the textbook if the writer would pay more times, attentions and endeavours in editing new textbooks.
