This Study is on the Literary viewpoints, reflected in the forewords and afterwords collected in Dongmunsoˇn(東文選). This subject has never been dealt with in previous studies on the f. and a. in Dongmunsoˇn(東文選).
The f. and a. inserted in Dongmunsoˇn reflected an aspect of the transitional period from Koryoˇ to Chosoˇn dynasty, Therfore, by classifying these works I have surveyed the transition of literary viewpoints diachronically.
Chapter II deals with the background and the selecting criteria of the compilation of Dongmunsoˇn, and the f. and a. have been classified in the third chapter. The criticisms reflected in the f. and a. have been studied in the fourth chapter, and the transition of literary viewpoints reflected in the f. and a. in the fifth chapter.
Along with Kyoˇnggukdaejeon(經國大典), Dongguktonggam(東國通鑑) and Donggukyoˇjisuˇngram(東國輿地勝覽), Dongmunsoˇn was compiled by royal order in 1478. The purpose of this compilation was to enlighten the people, so the criterion of selecting works was whether they met this purpose. The forewords were collected in vols. 83∼95 of Dongmunsoˇn and in vols. 15∼16 of Sok-Dongmunsoˇn (續東文選) (a sequel). The afterwords were collected in vols. 15∼16 of Dongmunsoˇn and in vol. 17 of Sok-Dongmunsoˇn.
These works were classified according to the periods and writers, most of which were written from the end of Koryoˇ dynasty to the beginning of Chosoˇn dynasty.
The f. and a. collected in Dongmunsoˇn can be classified by periods, writers and subjects. Chronologically they are classified into four groups: before Koryoˇ dynasty, Koryoˇ dynasty, between the end of Koryoˇ dynasty and the beginning of Chosoˇn dynasty, the early days of Chosoˇn dynasty.
The criticisms in the f. and a. are as follows. The typical writer before Koryoˇ dynasty is Won-hyo. He valued what writings mean and to what writings compare things. Writers of Koryoˇ dinasty who are dealt with are Lim Choon, Yi In-no, Yi Kyu-bo, Choi Ja, and Choi Hae.
Of these, Lim Choon says that nature as a writer is important., and Yi In -no says that poems come out of man's heart. Yi Kyu-bo insists that writings have positive function, and Chi Ja says that literature act is the door to reach our final destination(Do : 道). The criticisms between the end of Koryoˇ dynasty and the beginning of Chosoˇn dynasty become more profound.
Lee Saek and Lee Soong-in puts Learning of Do(道學) before literature. Chong Dojoˇn compares literature to the container of Do. The writers in the beginning of Chosoˇn dynasty are divided into those who held governmental offices and those who did not hold them. The representative of the former group is Soˇ Koˇ-joˇng. He praises the poems of his group of writers highly, saying that their poems carry very vigorous spirit. The representative of the latter group is Kim Chong-jik. He says that writings are based on the teachings of Confucius.
The transition of literary viewpoints a reflected in the f. and a. corresponds to the criticism. Before Koryoˇ dinasty, Won-hyo put primary emphasis on the harmony of truth and literature.
In Koryoˇ dynasty Lim choon and Yi In-no urged that writing in good style is an inborn gift. Yi Kyu-bo and Choi Ja emphasized Ki(氣) and the effectiveness of literature. And, Choi Hae realized the relationship between Chinese literature and Korean literature.
Literary viewpoints from the end of Koryoˇ dynasty to the beginning of Chosoˇn dynasty were based on Sung Confucianism. Yi Saek and Choˇng Mong-joo, Yi Soong-in urged that the writings represented the writer's character and made the readers impressed. Choˇng Do-jeon asserted that the writings should express the Do(道).
At the beginning of Chosoˇn dynasty Suh Koˇ-joˇng maintained that the writing should represent the writer's temper and Kim Chong-jik maintained that the Scripture of Sung Confucianism was the base for the good writings.
As mentioned above, this study treats the development of literary viewpoints reflected in the f. and a. in Dongmunsoˇn(東文選). This study suffers from weaknesses of imperfect structure and not exhaustive contents. But I think that it is very useful and meaningful to study the developments of Korean literary viewpoints.
