Taketori Monogatari is the oldest surviving work of Japanese monogatari literature. Since its formation in the early Heian period, it has been revered as the “ancestor of monogatari.” Centering on Princess Kaguya, who is born from a bamboo stalk, the narrative unfolds through the impossible tasks imposed on five noble suitors, the emperor’s courtship, her return to the moon, and the bequest of the elixir of immortality. The question of how much this work derives from indigenous Japanese oral traditions and how much it owes to classical Chinese literature and immortal thought has long been a central debate in Japanese literary studies. Adopting the perspective of “influence from China” as a unifying framework, this dissertation systematically reexamines the sources, structural features, ideological content, and later reception of Taketori Monogatari by integrating methods from comparative literature, philology, folklore studies, and adaptation theory.
Chapter Two outlines the background, textual traditions, and character formation of Taketori Monogatari, identifying three distinct layers within the work: an indigenous substratum of folktales; imported Chinese immortal thought and knowledge of Chinese classics; and the author’s creative psychological descriptions achieved through the use of the kana script. Chapter Three compares the work with the Tibetan folktale Lady Bamboo (Banzhu Guniang), the “Hiji no sato” passage from the Tango no Kuni Fudoki, and the “Bamboo Cutter” poem group in Man’yōshū. This comparison reveals a shared East Asian repertoire of motifs while simultaneously clarifying the distinctive features of the Japanese monogatari, particularly in its handling of the ending and the expression of human emotion.
Chapter Four provides a detailed identification of the classical Chinese sources for each of the five impossible tasks. It demonstrates that the Buddha’s Stone Bowl, the Jeweled Branch of Hōrai, the Robe of the Fire-Rat, and the Five‑colored Jewel of the Dragon’s Neck derive from such works as the Da Tang Xiyu Ji , the Shui Jing Zhu, Liezi, Shi Yi Ji , Shen Yi Jing, and Zhuangzi. These findings confirm the author’s profound erudition in Chinese learning. Chapter Five focuses on the reception of Chinese immortal thought and the Daoist worldview. Using the three keywords “moon palace,” “immortality,” and “ascension,” it analyses Princess Kaguya’s identity as an “exiled immortal” , the polar opposition between the moon capital and the “defiled land”, and the emperor’s burning of the elixir as a rejection of eternal life. Chapter Six examines the tale’s ending as an etiological legend concerning Mount Fuji, arguing that the “visual residue” connects heaven and earth, fiction and reality, thereby giving shape to a characteristically Japanese “view of impermanence”
From a comparative perspective, Chapter Seven offers a comprehensive juxtaposition of Taketori Monogatari and Lady Bamboo. Although both works share a common narrative framework, Lady Bamboo constructs a “relation-centered” and affect-driven tale of tragic love, placing human ethics and emotions at its core. By contrast, Taketori Monogatari fashions Princess Kaguya as a transcendent and autonomous being who ultimately severs all ties with the human world, thereby creating an “other-world return” type of monogatari. This divergence profoundly reflects the centrality of human sentiments and Confucian ethics in Chinese literature, as opposed to the primacy of the view of impermanence and belief in an other world in Japanese literature.
Chapter Eight traces the transformations of Taketori Monogatari in translation, adaptation, and popular culture from the modern period onward. From F. V. Dickins’ pioneering English translation (1888), the chirimen-bon children’s edition, the bilingual version by Kawabata Yasunari and Donald Keene, Suzuki Miekichi’s adaptation “Princess Kaguya,” Makime Manabu’s contemporary Japanese rendition, to Isao Takahata’s animated film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013), the work has been constantly “translated” and “remythologized.” The emergence of the “Princess Kaguya as an alien” interpretation shows how a classical text can acquire new life through modern science-fiction imagination. The chapter also reviews the translation and reception of Taketori Monogatari in China and the scholarly debates concerning the genetic relationship between The Taketori Monogatari and Lady Bamboo.
The main contributions of this dissertation are as follows. First, it empirically identifies the specific Chinese classical sources and immortal-thought motifs in Taketori Monogatari, filling several gaps in previous source studies. Second, it proposes a threefold framework of “selective reception, creative transformation, and ironic inversion” to explain how the author transformed foreign materials into an original Japanese literary expression. Third, through an in‑depth comparison with Lady Bamboo, it reveals the fundamental differences between Chinese and Japanese folk narratives with respect to the ontology of characters, the construction of worlds, and emotional values. The study demonstrates that Taketori Monogatari is not a mere adaptation of a Chinese text but an innovative work that, on the cultural foundation of the “Heian-period world of Chinese writing” and using the kana script as its medium, fuses immortal thought, Confucian ethics, and indigenous beliefs to create a monogatari whose core is “the beauty of human finitude.” These findings provide a new perspective for understanding the literary originality of Taketori Monogatari and offer a paradigmatic case for the study of East Asian cultural exchange and comparative literature.
