In this study, artificial defects are machined onto the surface of steel plates used in automotive components. Since the defect size is very small, nondestructive testing (NDT) methods are required. Among these, ultrasonic testing (UT) is the most widely applied technique. In particular, experimental parameters are established for evaluating surface defects in steel plates, and ultrasonic techniques are employed to implement an optimized UT method.
Furthermore, this research analyzes the influence of radiated ultrasonic fields from multiple angles on the evaluation of surface defects in steel plates used for automotive components. Comparative analysis is conducted through both experimental measurements and simulation techniques to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. For the experimental testing, steel flat plates and piston rods containing artificial defects of varying depths (0 μm, 300 μm, 600 μm, and 900 μm) were employed. The experimental procedures involved the generation, propagation, and reception of Rayleigh waves, followed by a detailed analysis of the acquired signals, as outlined below.
1) The CIVA simulation results confirmed that the ultrasonic radiation angle exerts a significant influence on both the propagation behavior of ultrasonic waves and the response of surface defects. Under varying radiation angles, the ultrasonic waves exhibited distinct propagation paths, acoustic field distributions, and scattering characteristics in the vicinity of the defect region. Furthermore, the simulations of ultrasonic testing using both the pulse–echo and pitch–catch techniques were successfully performed, thereby demonstrating their applicability to practical ultrasonic inspection scenarios.
2) The CIVA simulation is useful for visualizing the interaction between ultrasonic waves and surface defects before experimental testing. It also provides theoretical support for selecting suitable inspection angles and optimizing experimental conditions.
3) In the pitch–catch ultrasonic testing, four cases were examined: non-defect, vertical defect, 45° defect, and horizontal defect. In the non-defect case, the peak-to-peak amplitude was observed to be the highest. In contrast, the amplitudes decreased sequentially in the order of vertical defect, 45° defect, and horizontal defect. These results indicate that both the presence of surface defects and the orientation of the cracks exert a significant influence on the measured peak-to-peak amplitude.
4) Especially, when the transmitting ultrasonic transducer was fixed and the receiving ultrasonic transducer was scanned in the directions of 0°, 45°, and 90° relative to the surface wave, the peak-to-peak amplitude was compared. It was observed that the amplitude increased significantly from the 0° direction to the 90° direction. This result indicates that the radiation field of the surface ultrasonic wave was strongly influenced by the main ray.
5) Future research should aim to enhance the quantitative evaluation framework by expanding the range of defect sizes investigated, incorporating a broader selection of steel grades and surface conditions, and integrating advanced approaches such as signal processing techniques or machine learning algorithms to enable automated defect characterization.
