This study was conducted from the perspective of play psychological rehabilitation to examine the effects of early childhood teachers’ playfulness on children’s forest playfulness and to verify the mediating roles of play support competency and teacher–child interaction in this relationship. Since the implementation of the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum, interest in play-centered and nature-friendly education has expanded throughout early childhood education settings. In this context, forest play has emerged as a distinctive educational experience that promotes children’s creativity, spontaneity, emotional stability, and holistic development. Accordingly, this study integratively examined the pathways through which teachers’ playfulness is linked to children’s forest playfulness through play support competency and teacher–child interaction. The research questions were as follows: First, what are the relationships among early childhood teachers’ playfulness, play support competency, teacher–child interaction, and children’s forest playfulness? Second, what effect does early childhood teachers’ playfulness have on children’s forest playfulness? Third, how does early childhood teachers’ playfulness affect children’s forest playfulness through the mediating role of play support competency? Fourth, how does early childhood teachers’ playfulness affect children’s forest playfulness through the mediating role of teacher–child interaction? The participants were 310 teachers working in early childhood education institutions and childcare centers in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. Data were collected through a self-report questionnaire. SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0 were used for data analysis. Descriptive statistics were conducted to examine the general characteristics of the participants, followed by correlation analysis, structural equation modeling, and bootstrapping procedures. The findings were as follows. First, early childhood teachers’ playfulness had a significant positive effect on children’s forest playfulness. This finding is consistent with the principle of observational learning proposed in Bandura’s (1977) social learning theory, suggesting that children may develop positive attitudes toward play and a greater tendency to participate actively in play as they experience teachers’ playful behaviors and emotional expressions. In particular, within open forest environments, teachers’ playful attitudes may serve as an important factor in promoting children’s exploratory behaviors and creative play development. Second, play support competency mediated the relationship between early childhood teachers’ playfulness and children’s forest playfulness. Teachers with higher levels of playfulness demonstrated greater competency in understanding and appropriately supporting children’s play, and this professional competency was found to contribute positively to enhancing children’s forest playfulness. Third, teacher–child interaction was also identified as an important mediating variable explaining the relationship between early childhood teachers’ playfulness and children’s forest playfulness. Teachers with higher levels of playfulness formed warmer and more responsive interactions with children, and these relationships appeared to support children’s participation in forest play by enhancing their psychological sense of security. This finding supports the importance of therapeutic relationships emphasized in play psychological rehabilitation. In addition, higher-quality emotional, verbal, and behavioral interactions were associated with higher levels of children’s forest playfulness. Fourth, differences according to participants’ general characteristics were examined, and significant differences in play support competency were found according to age and teaching experience. In particular, novice teachers with fewer than three years of teaching experience showed lower levels of play support competency than other groups, whereas teachers with a certain level of field experience demonstrated relatively stable competency. This suggests that play support competency is a professional competency that develops through accumulated field experience. In conclusion, early childhood teachers’ playfulness was identified as a key factor that directly influences the development of children’s forest playfulness. Play support competency and teacher –child interaction were also confirmed as important mediating mechanisms through which the effects of teachers’ playfulness are transmitted to children. Therefore, to enhance children’s forest playfulness, continuous and systematic professional support is needed to foster teachers’ playfulness, strengthen their play support competency, and improve the quality of teacher–child interaction.
