The purpose of this study was to examine the level of Behavior
Intervention Plan (BIP) implementation efficacy among staff in
developmental disability facilities and to investigate the relationship
between attribution toward problem behavior and Behavior
Intervention Plan (BIP) implementation efficacy
The participants were 376 staff members employed at
developmental disability facilities in South Korea. Data were
collected through an online survey. The research instruments
consisted of the Challenging Behaviour Attributions Scale
(CHABA) and the BIP Implementation Efficacy Scale. The
collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics,
independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance
(ANOVA), Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression
analysis.
The major findings of this study are as follows.
First, among the subdomains of BIP implementation efficacy,
attitudes and values showed the highest level, followed by
collaboration and team-based implementation, data collection and
interpretation skills, BIP knowledge, implementation and application,
and institutional support and environment. Attitudes and values, as
well as collaboration and team-based implementation, were above
the overall average, whereas BIP knowledge, implementation and
application, and institutional support and environment were
relatively lower.
Second, regarding differences according to personal
characteristics, no significant differences were found by gender.
However, significant differences were identified according to age
and work experience. Older staff members showed higher levels of
BIP knowledge and attitudes and values, while staff with 16 or
more years of work experience demonstrated higher levels of BIP
implementation efficacy than those with fewer years of experience.
Third, significant differences in BIP implementation efficacy were
found according to job-related characteristics, including facility
type, job position, and experience in problem behavior intervention
training. Staff working in residential facilities showed higher levels
of attitudes and values than those working in community-based
facilities. In addition, managerial staff demonstrated higher levels of
BIP implementation efficacy than frontline staff. Staff who had
received problem behavior intervention training also showed higher
implementation efficacy, and implementation efficacy increased as
training hours increased.
Fourth, attribution toward problem behavior significantly affected
BIP implementation efficacy. Attribution of problem behavior as
learned behavior had a positive effec on BIP implementation
efficacy, whereas attribution to lack of stimulation had a negative
effect. Biological factors, physical environmental factors, and
emotional factors positively influenced some subdomains and the
overall level of BIP implementation efficacy. However, no
significant effec was found on the institutional support and
environment domain.
This study empirically identified the relationship between
attribution toward problem behavior and BIP implementation
efficacy among staff in developmental disability facilities. The
findings indicate that a functional understanding of problem
behavior, professional education on behavior intervention, and
organizational support are important factors in enhancing BIP
implementation efficacy. Therefore, this study provides fundamental
evidence for developing educational programs and organizational
support systems to strengthen the behavior intervention
competencies of staff working in developmental disability facilities.
