This thesis investigates how the Sasanian “pearl roundel” motif
(lianzhuwen, 聯珠紋) of Persia was transmitted along the Silk
Road and creatively transformed into the Tang-dynasty textile
pattern known as Lingyanggongyang Rather than
treating Lingyanggongyang as a simple imitation of foreign
ornament, the study conceptualizes it as a case of creative “design
translation,” in which an originally foreign visual schema is
structurally preserved yet substantively reconfigured in terms of
theme, meaning, technique, and aesthetics. By reconstructing the
process through which the Sasanian pearl roundel was received,
adapted,
and localized in China, this thesis repositions
Lingyanggongyang within a broader trans-Eurasian history of
imperial style.
Chapter 2 examines the origins and visual logic of the Sasanian
pearl roundel. It argues that the Sasanian lianzhutuanke
was not a purely decorative frame, but a highly codified visual
language shaped by Zoroastrian cosmology, royal ideology, and
courtly craft traditions. The circular beaded frame functioned as a
sacred-royal “halo” that enclosed animal figures such as winged
horses, boars, and ribbon-bearing birds, thereby visualizing power,
victory, and divine kingship. Through the agency of Sogdian
merchants and the oasis cities of Central Asia, this Sasanian
schema spread widely across the Silk Road, eventually becoming
part of a “world-imperial style” shared—adapted and reinterpreted
—by multiple regions.
Chapter 3 traces how the pearl roundel motif was received and
reworked in Northern Dynasties, Sui, and early Tang China.
Focusing on textiles excavated from sites such as Astana (Turfan)
and Dulan (Qinghai), as well as Chinese-made imitations, the
thesis shows how Chinese artisans selectively preserved the
structural principles of the roundel (circular medallions, bilateral
symmetry, continuous repetition) while gradually transforming its
geometric rigidity into organic vegetal frames composed of scrolls
and floral motifs. In this process, the pearl roundel shifted from an
emblem of mechanical order to a vehicle for East Asian ideals of
“vital resonance” and “voluminous decoration,” paving the way for
the emergence of Lingyanggongyang as a distinctly Tang pattern.
Chapters 4 and 5 focus on the formation and visual language of
Lingyanggongyang itself. By examining the bicultural identity of
the designer Dou Shilun (竇師綸), the technical base of Shu
brocades (蜀錦) in Yizhou (益州), and the open, cosmopolitan
atmosphere of early Tang, the study reconstructs the
socio-technical conditions that made this pattern possible. It then
analyzes how Sasanian animal emblems—such as winged horses,
boar heads, and ribbon-bearing birds—were systematically replaced
by sinicized auspicious animals like soaring phoenixes, battling
rams, and roaming qilin. While the functional meanings of power,
divine sanction, order, and moral virtue were retained, their
symbolic carriers were fundamentally localized within the Chinese
cultural universe. At the same time, abstract and highly
schematized animal figures were recast as anatomically convincing,
dynamically posed creatures, and clearly separated zones within the
roundel were visually integrated through proliferating scrolls and
blossoms, transforming the motif from a distant sacred code into
an emotionally engaging aesthetic object.
The conclusion formulates the overall logic of intercultural design
translation exemplified by Lingyanggongyang in five interrelated
stages: transplantation and flexibilization of structural skeletons,
functional yet culturally grounded substitution of themes, semantic
reconfiguration,
technological
adaptation,
and
aesthetic
harmonization. This logic demonstrates that intercultural design
translation is neither passive copying of foreign models nor a
simple return to indigenous tradition, but an intentional, selective,
and creative act of redesign. By articulating this logic through a
concrete Tang case, the thesis contributes to Silk Road art history
and the study of Tang textiles, while also offering historical
insight for contemporary debates in Korea on how to appropriate
global visual forms without losing local cultural agency.
