This study focuses on the piano work 〈Niñerías, Series 1, Op. 21〉by the Spanish composer Joaquín Turina (1882–1949), with the aim of examining the emotions and nationalistic elements inherent in Turina’s piano music. Through this, the study seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the Spanish national identity and personal musical language manifested in his works.
Turina’s musical creation took place within the developmental context of Spanish nationalist music from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. From childhood, he was influenced by Spain’s indigenous musical culture, and later, in Paris, he encountered and studied modern French compositional techniques. Accordingly, his works inherit the melodic, rhythmic, and sonorous characteristics of Spanish national music on the one hand, while on the other hand embracing the delicate harmonic colors and clear sense of structure found in French music. Turina did not merely quote folk melodies; rather, by combining national musical vocabulary, modern compositional techniques, and personal emotional expression, he established a distinctive musical style.
Although 〈Niñerías, Series 1, Op. 21〉 belongs to a collection of relatively short piano pieces, it intensively reveals several important characteristics that constitute Turina’s musical language. Within its concise musical structure, the work presents sonorous features reflecting the Spanish national style through short phrases, motivic development, ornamental figures, dance-like rhythms, modal colors, and various piano textures. In addition, by incorporating guitar-like sonorities, folk-like melodies, and dance-like rhythmic movement, it gives Turina’s piano music a distinct national color.
Through an examination of this work, this study aims to clarify how Turina fused elements of Spanish national music with modern compositional techniques within the genre of the piano miniature, and further to illuminate his unique artistic individuality. In doing so, it seeks to serve as a reference for understanding the national musical language found in Turina’s piano music and to provide a concrete case study for research on related works.
