This dissertation aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the relationship between poetry and music, compositional techniques, and aesthetic characteristics in Felix Draeseke(1835-1913)’s song cycle 〈Märzblumen, Op. 2〉. To this end, the poetic texts of Adolf Stern were analyzed with particular attention to their thematic content and symbolic structures, while the six songs comprising the cycle were examined in terms of form, melody, rhythm and meter, harmony, tonality, piano accompaniment, and word-painting techniques.
The findings reveal that 〈Märzblumen, Op. 2〉 is grounded in the formal unity and lyricism characteristic of the German Lied tradition, while simultaneously incorporating aspects of the expanded musical language that emerged during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, including extended melodic writing, enriched harmonic vocabulary, frequent modulations, and fluid tonal organization. From a poetic perspective, the cycle constructs a continuous narrative trajectory centered on natural imagery and the theme of love, depicting an emotional progression from awakening and introspection to renewal, affirmation, purification, healing, and ultimately spiritual union. Although each song maintains its individual identity, all six songs contribute to the organic unity of the cycle as a whole. Musically, the work demonstrates a strong sense of coherence through the repetition, transformation, and development of motivic materials. Furthermore, rhythmic and metric structures closely reflect psychological and emotional changes, while word-painting techniques vividly articulate poetic symbolism. The harmonic language is characterized by the coexistence of traditional functional harmony and coloristic harmonic practices. In addition, the piano accompaniment transcends a merely supportive role, functioning as a central expressive agent that shapes poetic imagery, emotional development, and structural unity throughout the cycle.
In particular,〈Märzblumen, Op. 2〉 inherits the formal principles of the German Lied tradition and the compositional legacy established by Robert Schumann, while also selectively adopting progressive musical elements associated with the New German School. As such, the work exemplifies an early stage in Draeseke’s compositional development in which tradition and innovation coexist. The analysis suggests that Draeseke cannot be reduced to a single aesthetic orientation; rather, he integrated diverse musical influences into a distinctive personal style.
The significance of this dissertation lies in its systematic investigation of 〈Märzblumen, Op. 2〉, an early song cycle by Draeseke that has received relatively limited scholarly attention. By reassessing the work through an integrated analysis of its poetic and musical dimensions, this study clarifies Draeseke’s position within the history of nineteenth-century German vocal music and illuminates the aesthetic balance he achieved between tradition and innovation. Furthermore, the dissertation demonstrates that 〈Märzblumen, Op. 2〉 represents an important example of the gradual incorporation of new expressive techniques into the established framework of the German Lied, thereby offering a fresh perspective on the development of nineteenth-century German Romantic music and art song.
