This study is based on the concept and principles of “transmedia
storytelling” proposed by Henry Jenkins. It analyzes contemporary Korean
performing arts and content cases in order to suggest concrete directions and
possibilities for transmedia expansion in theatre creation.
Transmedia storytelling (hereafter TMS) refers to a narrative strategy in which
story elements are dispersed and expanded across different media, yet are
ultimately assembled into a single, coherent storyworld. It is designed to
encourage audiences to think and respond actively, rather than to consume
passively. TMS goes beyond the simple transfer of content from one medium
to another, taking immersion and expansion as its core values. In this model,
consumers are transformed from passive receivers into active participants in the
narrative, and each medium is expected to contribute to the whole story
through its own specific form and conventions, forming a complementary
relationship with other media.
These characteristics share a strong affinity with contemporary theatre. The
liveness generated when actors and spectators share the same time and space
creates a level of immersion that few other media can match. Direct and
indirect audience participation can also stimulate the expansion of the narrative.
Furthermore, such participation can strengthen fandom, foster a sense of
community, and help sustain audience loyalty.
Despite these close points of contact, attempts to integrate TMS into theatrical
creation and scholarly research in the Korean theatre field remain relatively
limited compared to other media.
Accordingly, this study seeks to examine, through several case studies, how
the distinctive features of contemporary theatre intersect with TMS within the
current media environment. It also aims to identify the limitations revealed in
these cases and to explore how TMS can be employed more effectively in
theatrical practice.
To this end, the research takes Jenkins’s theory as its principal framework,
while adapting and applying it in light of the specific conditions of the
Korean creative environment. In addition, the study does not remain at the
level of theoretical discussion; it presents a work proposed by the researcher
as a practical case in order to further investigate how TMS can be utilized in
theatre.
The significance of this research lies in supporting theatre practitioners not in
seeking a single, standardized “correct answer,”
but in developing their own
original interpretations and concretizing distinctive characters and storyworlds.
Ultimately, it is expected that this study will contribute to the reconstruction
of yet-unexplored narrative potentials and to the emergence of new artistic
forms that transcend the boundaries between plays and screenplays, and that
converge and expand across diverse artistic genres.
