The purpose of this study was to phenomenologically explore the learning, living, and cultural adaptation experiences of Chinese graduate students majoring in physical education who studied in Korea. To achieve this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with Chinese international students enrolled in graduate programs in physical education in Korea. The collected interview data were analyzed using Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method. The researcher repeatedly read the interview transcripts to grasp the overall context of the participants’ experiences, identified meaning units, and transformed them into academic expressions. Through comparison and integration of similar meanings, 56 meaning units and 22 central meanings were derived, which were finally organized into five major categories.
The findings revealed that the Korean study-abroad experiences of Chinese graduate students majoring in physical education were categorized into five themes: “Taking the first step toward Korea,” “A strange classroom and a wavering self,” “Sport as another language,” “What held me together,” and “My journey of integration.” First, the participants chose to study in Korea based on a combination of factors, including the desire for higher academic qualifications, future employment opportunities, limitations in domestic graduate school admission in China, the influence of friends, seniors, and family members, geographical and cultural proximity, and expectations toward Korean culture and sport environments. Second, during the early stage of studying in Korea, the participants experienced difficulties in communication, a gap between understanding and expression, challenges with technical terminology and academic writing, decreased self-confidence, disruptions in daily rhythms, and a sense of social distance. Third, although the participants felt constrained in classroom discussions and presentations, they were able to build relationships, recover a sense of belonging, and regain confidence through bodily interaction in sport activities. Fourth, friends, seniors, family members, professors, peers, translation tools, and AI-based resources functioned as important sources of support that enabled them to continue their study-abroad life. Fifth, through repeated academic tasks, presentation preparation, attempts to express themselves in Korean, learning academic writing conventions, and accepting aspects of Korean everyday culture, the participants gradually integrated into the academic and living environment in Korea.
These findings indicate that the Korean study-abroad experience of Chinese graduate students majoring in physical education cannot be understood merely as a matter of language or daily-life adaptation. Rather, it represents a process in which the athletic body and the academic self are reconstructed within the unfamiliar environment of Korean graduate education. In particular, this study confirmed that sport activities played an important role in emotional regulation, relationship formation, recovery of belonging, and maintenance of professional identity among international students majoring in physical education. Therefore, Korean universities need to establish major-specific academic support, sport-based intercultural exchange programs, and relationship-centered integrated support systems for international students in physical education.
