Black pottery occupies an important position in the ceramic culture of prehistoric China. This dissertation examines Chinese black pottery, with the Eggshell-thin Black Pottery Stem Cup excavated in Shandong Province as its primary case. Beginning with the visual-perceptual formal beauty of the vessel, it investigates functional transitions within changing historical contexts, transformations in symbolic meaning, and the mechanisms through which cultural identity was formed.
Previous studies have produced substantial findings in archaeological investigation, manufacturing processes, and historical chronology. However, aesthetic interpretations integrating the artistic characteristics, symbolic meanings, and cultural inheritance of black pottery remain insufficient. Accordingly, this study establishes a multilayered analytical framework combining Rudolf Arnheim’s theory of visual perception, semiotic aesthetics encompassing structuralist analysis and myth theory based on the ideas of Ernst Cassirer, Claude Lévi-Strauss, and Roland Barthes, and the reception aesthetics of Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser. These three theoretical approaches are applied respectively to the visual-perceptual formal characteristics of black pottery, the logic of symbolic transformation in response to changes in myth and power structures, and the decoding and reconstruction of symbolic meaning in accordance with shifts in the Horizon of Expectations.
The visual-perceptual analysis demonstrates that the Eggshell-thin Black Pottery Stem Cup achieves visual balance and structural completeness through an extreme process of simplification. Its elongated vertical proportions generate an upward-directed perceptual force and an elevated aesthetic sensibility. Simplification is understood here as an aesthetic process of refinement through which form, proportion, and the transitions of curves are highly condensed to produce strong visual tension and intrinsic expressiveness. Its extremely thin walls, vertical proportions, refined transitions of curved surfaces, and the light-and-dark relationships of its jet-black surface perceptually visualize its ritual function and symbolic character.
From the perspective of semiotic aesthetics and myth theory, the Eggshell-thin Black Pottery Stem Cup may be understood as a symbolic vessel that conveyed authority and sacredness within ritual contexts rather than as an object of everyday use. Considering the differentiation of vessel forms and the transformation of their functions, the vessel may have been held by a ritual officiant at the stem section as a symbolic medium connecting heaven and earth. The egg-like form of the stem section and the bead contained within it evoke ideas of the origin of life and suggest a possible association with communal rituals concerned with the birth of descendants and the prosperity of the community. The vessel may therefore be regarded as a symbolic manifestation of Mythological Politics through which rulers legitimized their authority.
As social consciousness became increasingly secularized and material systems changed, the original mythic structure gradually weakened. This historical process of recoding serves as a broad indicator of the transition from a priest-centered theocratic order to secular social structures and everyday forms of life. Reception aesthetics explains this process through Wirkungsgeschichte, in which the meanings of artifacts are continuously reconstructed through the perception and interpretation of historical recipients. The symbolic value of the Eggshell-thin Black Pottery Stem Cup was not fixed but emerged as a fluid outcome shaped by changes in the Horizon of Expectations shared by recipients in different periods. Such transformations in meaning interacted with political institutions, economic structures, perceptions of everyday life, and policies of cultural transmission, leading to the formal transformation and reproduction of black pottery. The transformation of black pottery from a concrete object into an abstract cultural symbol was therefore the result of acts of reception under specific historical conditions, and its meaning has been continuously reconstructed over time.
This study demonstrates that changes in the visual-perceptual formal beauty and artistic characteristics of black pottery were not merely the result of technological development or stylistic change. Rather, they constituted a holistic process in which formal order, historical symbolism, and cultural reception interacted to generate and reconstruct meaning while sustaining cultural inheritance. The multilayered analytical framework combining visual perception theory, semiotic aesthetics, and reception aesthetics expands the interpretive scope of black pottery research beyond empirical chronology. Focusing on the Eggshell-thin Black Pottery Stem Cup, it clarifies the formal logic, symbolic structure, and changing cultural meanings of Chinese black pottery from multiple perspectives. It also provides a methodological approach for examining the interaction among form, symbol, and reception in studies of material culture and ceramics. Furthermore, the multilayered structure of meaning and the pathways of cultural inheritance identified in this study may broaden the scope of comparative ceramic research and interpretations of East Asian material culture, while contributing to a sustainable model for the modernization of traditional crafts.
