The purpose of this study was to phenomenologically explore the meaning structure of officiating experiences among referees in Chinese professional football leagues. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight football referees who had officiating experience in Chinese professional football leagues. The collected data were analyzed according to Giorgi’s phenomenological analysis procedure. The interview transcripts were read repeatedly to grasp the overall meaning of the participants’ experiences. Meaning units were then identified from the participants’ statements and transformed into academic expressions. Subsequently, these meaning units were compared, classified, and integrated to construct central meanings and categories, thereby revealing the essential structure of the referees’ experiences.
The analysis yielded five categories, 18 central meanings, and 77 meaning units. First, “the entrance to football refereeing” represented the process through which the participants entered the world of refereeing and formed their referee identity through their affection for football, accidental recommendations and encounters, and the limitations or interruption of their playing careers. Second, “the weight of the whistle” described the process of acquiring refereeing expertise through repeated learning of the rules, physical training and self-management, promotion through referee grades and education programs, and self-directed learning through match video analysis and communication with senior referees. Third, “the whistle that divides the flow” included experiences in which a single decision changed the flow and atmosphere of a match, referees coordinated match order through rule application and communication, and they exercised their senses and judgment in unpredictable situations. Fourth, “the gaze toward fairness” reflected the experience of maintaining fairness amid VAR, media, social media, differences between fans’ expectations and their understanding of the rules, evaluation and promotion systems, external criticism and pressure, and gendered perceptions and physical demands faced by female referees. Fifth, “the stadium left within me” showed how refereeing experiences became internalized in the participants’ lives through support and recognition from family and colleagues, self-management and character changes in everyday life, and the realization of values by contributing to football and society beyond personal achievement.
These findings indicate that the experiences of referees in Chinese professional football leagues are not limited to the occupational act of applying the rules and making decisions. Rather, refereeing experiences can be understood as a process that begins with affection for football, develops into the formation of referee identity, leads to the acquisition of expertise through rules, training, and experience, involves the responsibility of decision-making and match management on the field, requires the maintenance of fairness within technological, public, and institutional scrutiny, and ultimately becomes internalized within the individual’s life and identity. In particular, professional league referees were positioned not only as actors responsible for maintaining the order and fairness of the game, but also as subjects continuously monitored and evaluated by VAR, media, fans, and evaluation systems.
Therefore, to enhance the professionalism and sustainability of referees, referee development systems should move beyond rule-centered education and include practical match case analysis, video-based feedback, positioning and match management training, coping strategies for psychological pressure, communication training within referee teams, institutional mechanisms for referee protection, and rule communication systems for fans and media. In addition, a gender-equal refereeing environment and support system should be established so that female referees can be recognized for their expertise and continue to develop despite gendered prejudices and physical demands.
By analyzing the experiences of referees in Chinese professional football leagues in depth, this study suggests that referees should be understood not merely as enforcers of the rules, but as important actors who constitute the order and fairness of the game and support the sustainability of football culture. Future research should expand the multidimensional understanding of football refereeing experiences by comparing the experiences of diverse referee groups, such as female referees, novice professional league referees, VAR officials, and national-level referees.
