With the advancement of digital technologies and the widespread adoption of virtual environment–based design tools, fashion design is increasingly transitioning toward a digitally centered design system. In particular, three-dimensional virtual garment design software such as CLO enables the integrated execution of garment pattern making, pattern application, material setting, virtual fitting, dynamic presentation, and rendering processes, providing new possibilities for transforming traditional cultural elements into contemporary fashion design. Within this context, traditional textile patterns are no longer regarded merely as decorative references but are increasingly recognized as valuable design resources that can be analyzed, reconstructed, and applied within digital fashion design processes.
Zhuang textiles are representative traditional textiles of the Zhuang ethnic group in China and are characterized by distinctive geometric structures, repetitive compositional orders, and symbolic color systems. As the only ethnic minority textile among China’s four famous brocades, Zhuang textiles possess significant cultural and design value. However, previous studies on Zhuang textiles have primarily focused on their historical origins, cultural meanings, pattern classification, and documentation. Relatively little research has systematically examined the compositional logic and transformation mechanisms of Zhuang textile patterns or explored their integration into CLO-based fashion design processes. In particular, the application of traditional motifs in contemporary fashion design often relies on manual redrawing or superficial decorative placement, resulting in limitations in terms of design reproducibility and scalability.
Therefore, this study focuses on Zhuang textile patterns, analyzes their compositional units and transformation principles, organizes them into a rule-based system using Shape Grammar (SG), and proposes a process for transforming them into contemporary fashion design through CLO. Rather than merely reproducing traditional patterns or applying them decoratively to garment surfaces, this study explores methods of integrating generated patterns with two-dimensional garment patterns, structural lines, decorative areas, color planning, material settings, and three-dimensional garment forms. Through this approach, the study investigates how Zhuang textile patterns can be effectively utilized within contemporary CLO-based fashion design.
The objectives of this study are threefold. First, it aims to analyze the core compositional elements and repetition-transformation logic of Zhuang textile patterns and establish a digital pattern generation method based on Shape Grammar. Second, it seeks to develop a design transformation process that combines generated digital patterns with contemporary fashion silhouettes and to examine how these patterns can be applied and adjusted within garment structural lines, decorative areas, and major visual zones. Third, it aims to evaluate the visual stability, garment applicability, and scalability of the proposed design method through three-dimensional virtual garment production and simulation using CLO.
To achieve these objectives, the study addresses the following research questions. First, what structural characteristics of Zhuang textile patterns can be transformed into a Shape Grammar–based generative model? Second, how can digitally generated patterns derived from Shape Grammar be applied to garment patterns and structural areas within the CLO fashion design process? Third, can the processes of pattern generation, design transformation, and CLO application function as an effective contemporary fashion design methodology while preserving the cultural identity of traditional patterns?
Methodologically, this study adopts Research through Design (RtD) as its primary framework and employs a phased research structure that combines theoretical analysis with design experimentation. First, a literature review was conducted to examine the cultural value of Zhuang textiles, the formal characteristics of textile patterns, the generative principles of Shape Grammar, and the applicability of CLO in fashion design. Subsequently, representative patterns were collected and digitized, followed by pattern structure analysis and Shape Grammar rule modeling. Based on these analyses, experiments involving single-pattern transformations and multi-pattern combinations were conducted. Finally, the generated patterns were applied to contemporary fashion design, and their applicability was evaluated through garment pattern construction, pattern mapping, material setting, virtual fitting, dynamic presentation, and multi-angle rendering using CLO.
The findings indicate that the Shape Grammar model effectively analyzes and expands the repetitive, symmetrical, geometric, and combinatorial characteristics of Zhuang textile patterns. The generated digital patterns were successfully applied to various garment areas, including bodices, sleeves, skirt centers, collars, hems, and edge decorations. Furthermore, CLO-based three-dimensional simulations confirmed their visual applicability in both two-dimensional pattern layouts and three-dimensional garment forms. In particular, the CLO application process enabled adjustments to pattern scale, orientation, repetition intervals, placement positions, color relationships, and material expressions, thereby facilitating the evaluation of the formal compatibility between generated patterns and garment structures.
From an academic perspective, this study is significant in that it interprets Zhuang textile patterns through the rule-based design methodology of Shape Grammar, thereby demonstrating the methodological potential for linking traditional textile pattern research with digital fashion design studies. Furthermore, by employing design experiments and CLO fashion design outcomes as research outputs within an RtD framework, the study presents a research structure that integrates theoretical analysis with design practice. From a practical perspective, the proposed pattern generation and CLO application methods may serve as valuable references for traditional textile pattern–based fashion design, digital collection development, virtual exhibitions, and metaverse fashion content creation.
Nevertheless, this study focuses primarily on the digital generation of Zhuang textile patterns and their visual application through CLO rather than on actual textile production or physical material experimentation. Consequently, the verification of physical properties such as tactile quality, weight, drape, and weaving density falls outside the scope of this research. These limitations may be addressed in future studies through physical material production, digital textile printing (DTP), weaving experiments, and wearability evaluations.
