Jennifer Higdon (1962– ) is a composer who has built a distinctive musical idiom through diverse creations including operas, art songs and orchestral works since the late 20th century. Her song cycle Notes on Love, composed in 1992, features original texts written by herself and adopts a chamber music form scored for voice, flute and piano. As a representative work, it both inherits and breaks away from the traditions of 19th-century German song cycles. This study takes the eight pieces of this cycle as its research subject. It explores the intertextuality in structure and text between Notes on Love and Robert Schumann’s (1810–1856) song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben, and analyzes their musical frameworks and expressive techniques. The aim is to clarify the aesthetic value and innovative narrative model of this work as a modern narrative art song.
This research first reviews the development of American art songs in the late 20th century, as well as Higdon’s life, creative tendencies and compositional philosophy, so as to examine the textual structure and musical principles of Notes on Love. The analysis reveals that Higdon prioritizes linear melodic development over vertical harmony. By employing asymmetrical rhythmic patterns and intuitive modal sound organization, she arranges emotions surrounding love organically along the timeline. Each piece unfolds independently following its poetic context. The pizzicato of interior strings in the first piece Love and the ostinato trill in the second piece Speak of Night set up a dramatic atmosphere. Frequent meter changes and asymmetrical rhythms in the third piece Could it Be?, combined with dissonant ostinatos, subvert the typical portrayal of tension in the early stage of romance. The fourth piece Nightingale dispenses with piano accompaniment entirely. Supported solely by flute and set in G Phrygian mode, it personifies the nightingale and conveys a mood of longing. The continuous eighth-note lines and 7/8-time unison passages in the sixth piece The Path create a retrospective narrative and powerful rhythmic momentum. In the seventh piece Day is done, snare-drum-like ornamental rhythmic figures in the piano part and atonal flute imitations of birdcalls weaken the tonal stability of the tonic in C minor, depicting hesitation amid loss. The eighth piece abandons lyrics and evolves into a perpetuum mobile instrumental line. Subtly layered beneath bright waltz rhythms is a descending lament bass ostinato in the piano bass register, forming a sophisticated dual emotional state that conceals sorrow over loss beneath a cheerful surface. Based on the above musical analysis, this paper further proposes practical performance strategies for the cycle, including proper vocal placement, breath control, execution of the off-beat rhythms characteristic of the "Higdon Hard" style, and ensemble techniques for chamber music collaboration.
Through a systematic analysis of the complete cycle, this study demonstrates Higdon’s originality. She reinterprets the textual and narrative conventions of Romantic music, and translates a modern, equal perspective on love—one that advocates active acceptance and transcendence of loss—into musical language. This research provides theoretical references for future studies on contemporary American art songs, as well as for vocal teaching and performance practice.
