The purpose of this study is to explore the principles for developing a beginner-level method book appropriate for introductory instruction for the low-pitched guzheng and, on that basis, to design a stage-based instructional sequence and representative lesson plans. Although the low-pitched guzheng belongs to the same instrumental family as the conventional guzheng, it has structural and acoustic characteristics centered on the low register. Therefore, existing introductory method books for the conventional guzheng cannot be applied without limitation, and separate developmental principles that reflect the distinctive characteristics of the low-pitched guzheng are required. Accordingly, this study sought to establish a theoretical foundation for the development of a beginner-level method book for the low-pitched guzheng and to propose a stage-based organizational direction that may serve as a basis for future classroom application.
This study was conducted as a qualitative study employing document analysis and comparative analysis. The materials analyzed consisted of beginner-level method books and introductory instructional materials for the traditional guzheng, instructional materials for low-register string instruments, and theoretical literature addressing the structure, acoustics, and performance techniques of the low-pitched guzheng. Each source was examined with respect to the organization of instructional content, the principles underlying the sequencing of learning stages, explanatory structure, notation systems, and the use of visual materials. Through this process, the study derived the content framework and compilation principles required for a beginner-level method book for the low-pitched guzheng.
The findings indicate that introductory instruction for the low-pitched guzheng can be systematized as a five-stage sequential learning structure. Stage 1 concerns understanding the structure of the instrument and the arrangement of the low strings. Stage 2 focuses on the formation of stable tone production through sustained and repeated production of a single low tone. Stage 3 emphasizes movement across adjacent low strings and the reinforcement of positional awareness. Stage 4 extends musical continuity through short melodic progressions and basic rhythmic variations. Stage 5 integrates the elements learned in the preceding stages into short musical phrases. This sequence demonstrates structural coherence in that it clearly organizes the order of learning without excessively expanding the content of introductory instruction.
In addition, each stage was designed so that visual materials, numbered notation (jianpu), and Western staff notation were organically interconnected. Visual materials were presented not as supplementary aids but as core instructional resources that guide the sequence of learning and allow learners to perceive structural relationships in advance. The parallel presentation of numbered notation and Western staff notation was organized so that learners could confirm that two different notational systems represent the same sonic structure and thereby connect performance experience with notation in a natural manner. Furthermore, this study expands introductory instruction for the low-pitched guzheng beyond simple pitch-centered training by including stability of tone production, tone color, resonance, and awareness of acoustic response as part of the educational content.
In conclusion, this study confirms that a beginner-level method book for the low-pitched guzheng cannot be developed simply by extending the technique sequence of general guzheng method books into a lower register. Beginner-level education for the low-pitched guzheng should address the understanding of instrument structure, low-register position awareness, stable sound production, resonance listening, and the function of the bass part in a sequential manner, and these elements need to be reflected directly in the organization of units and representative lesson plans. The five-stage structure and representative lesson plans proposed in this study serve as a preliminary model that specifies these issues and may be used as a basis for future textbook development and classroom application research.
