This dissertation to analyze how the poems from Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali are musically embodied in Jean Cras’s song cycle L’Offrande lyrique, through André Gide’s French translation. As a work based on Tagore’s own English translation from Bengali and subsequently mediated through Gide’s French version, L’Offrande lyrique represents an important example of how a translated literary text was received and transformed within the genre of French art song. It demonstrates the process by which a translated text guides musical form and modes of expression. The analysis shows that, in L’Offrande lyrique, Gide’s French text does not merely function as a medium for transmitting the meaning of the original poems. Rather, it reshapes the delicate emotions, symbolic expressions, and poetic development of Tagore’s text. Based on these features of the translated text, Cras musically materializes the emotional and spiritual process that unfolds from offering to light through form, melody, rhythm, harmony, and piano accompaniment. The formal structures of the songs reflect the development of each poem and are organized into three-part, four-part, and five-part forms, while the six songs as a whole are connected as a continuous spiritual and psychological journey. The work gradually presents a process that begins with the offering of a fragile flower and proceeds through waiting in silence, repose, the recognition of absence and loss, and the certainty of love, finally reaching the fullness of light and joy. Melody closely follows the declamatory tone of the French text and the flow of emotion, employing ascending and descending lines, restricted pitch ranges, recitative-like melodic writing, perfect-fourth leaps, melismas, and contrasts of register to reveal the speaker’s inner transformation and psychological narrative. Rhythm gives concrete musical shape to sensations of touch, silence, lament, excitement, and joy through the expansion of rhythmic values, pauses and rests, changes of meter, multiple meters, and polyrhythm. Tonality and harmony deepen the meditative and mystical qualities of Tagore’s poetry, as well as the speaker’s inner world, through altered chords, diminished seventh chords, half-diminished seventh chords, modal scales, and harmonies with ambiguous tonal centers. In addition, the piano accompaniment does not remain a mere background supporting the vocal line; rather, it performs a narrative function by anticipating or expanding the poetic images of the text and guiding the speaker’s psychological journey. In conclusion, Cras’s L’Offrande lyrique may be understood as a song cycle that reconstructs Tagore’s spiritual world within French art song on the basis of Gide’s French translation. In particular, the work forms a coherent spiritual and psychological narrative that moves from offering to silence and repose, then through absence and love, and ultimately toward the joy of light. It shows how a foreign literary text can be transformed into a new vocal aesthetic through translation and musical setting. This study confirms that translated literature can serve not merely as textual material for French art song, but also as an important foundation for shaping musical form and expressive principles. In this sense, L’Offrande lyrique can be regarded as a representative case that demonstrates how the reception of foreign literature, mediated through translation and musicalization, expanded the expressive range of French art song in the early twentieth century.
