In this study, Diphenylalanine (FF) nanostructures were fabricated using a biomimetic self-assembly-based process, and their applicability to colorimetric sensors and selective patterned structures was investigated. Biomimetic self-assembly is a process in which highly ordered structures are spontaneously formed without external intervention through non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and van der Waals forces. Owing to its simplicity and high energy efficiency, this process has attracted significant attention in the fields of materials science and nanoengineering. In particular, solution-based self-assembly processes offer advantages such as the ability to form large-area structures and facile control of structural properties through process parameters.
Diphenylalanine (FF) is a representative peptide-based self-assembling material capable of forming various nanostructures, including nanofibers, nanotubes, and linear structures, depending on the fabrication conditions. FF-based structures exhibit excellent mechanical stability and optical properties simultaneously, making them promising candidates for applications in biosensors, functional materials, and optical devices. In particular, structural color is determined by variations in the thickness, periodicity, and refractive index of nanostructures, enabling their application as sensor platforms that are highly responsive to environmental changes.
In Chapter 1, FF nanostructures were fabricated using a meniscus-driven pulling process, and the structural formation mechanisms and optical properties under different processing conditions were analyzed. The meniscus-driven process aligns structures through the meniscus region formed during solution evaporation and movement, enabling the fabrication of uniform self-assembled structures through a relatively simple process. In this study, the structural formation behavior was compared according to solution concentration, pulling speed, and substrate conditions, while the alignment state and surface morphology of the fabricated FF structures were systematically analyzed. In addition, structural color changes were observed to quantitatively evaluate the optical property variations induced by different processing conditions.
Furthermore, by analyzing the color-changing behavior in response to external environmental stimuli, the potential of FF nanostructures as colorimetric sensors was demonstrated. Based on the characteristic that the wavelength of reflected light changes according to structural variations, visual signal changes were induced, suggesting the possibility of intuitively detecting external stimuli without the need for complex measurement equipment. These results indicate that FF-based self-assembled structures can serve as next-generation low-cost optical sensor platforms.
In Chapter 2, selective pattern formation of hydrogels and peptide nanostructures was achieved by combining SAM (Self-Assembled Monolayer)-based surface modification technology with the FF self-assembly process. Nanobio materials can simultaneously provide biocompatibility and functionality, making them attractive for various bio-related applications. Since the physical and chemical properties of these materials strongly depend on their structural arrangement and morphology, technologies capable of selectively forming structures at desired locations and precisely controlling micro-patterns are critically important.
In this study, SAMs were utilized to control the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of substrate surfaces, thereby inducing the selective growth of hydrogels and FF structures only in designated regions. In addition, the structural growth characteristics and alignment behavior under varying process conditions were comparatively analyzed. The fabricated patterned structures exhibited uniform alignment characteristics, while the growth directionality and density of the structures varied depending on the surface properties. These results confirm that SAM-based surface control technology can be effectively utilized for the selective growth and pattern formation of self-assembled structures.
In conclusion, this study systematically analyzed the structural and optical properties of FF nanostructures fabricated through biomimetic self-assembly-based processes and demonstrated their potential applications in colorimetric sensors and selective patterned bio-materials. Furthermore, by combining the meniscus-driven process with SAM-based surface modification technology, effective control over the alignment and growth location of self-assembled structures was achieved. The findings of this study are expected to provide fundamental insights for the development of functional biomaterials, optical sensors, and pattern-based nanostructure fabrication technologies.
