This dissertation examines 〈Cycle of Love, 1981〉, a song cycle by the Australian composer Anne Boyd (b. 1946), with the aim of investigating how Korean, Indonesian, and Japanese musical elements are reconstructed as Asian sonic elements within a work based on Korean sijo texts and of proposing performance-practice perspectives derived from this analysis.
As a composer associated with the search for new musical identities through cultural connections with the Asia-Pacific region during the late twentieth century, Boyd reinterpreted cyclic temporal structures, timbre-oriented aesthetics, and concepts of melody and sonic space found in the traditional music of Indonesia, Japan, and Korea within her own compositional language. Composed for voice, alto flute, cello, and piano, 〈Cycle of Love, 1981〉 is one of Boyd’s representative vocal works and provides a comprehensive example of her compositional style. The cycle consists of Song I – Interlude I – Song II – Song III – Song IV – Interlude II – Song V and sets English translations of Korean sijo poetry. The work integrates characteristics of Korean traditional music with selected elements of Indonesian and Japanese musical traditions, together with aspects of modern Western harmonic language.
The findings of this study are as follows. First, the work reflects the expressive qualities of Korean sijo texts through the use of pentatonic collections reminiscent of p’yŏngjo and modified kyemyŏnjo modes. Melodic writing incorporating explicitly notated sigimsae-like ornamentation creates the fluid and dynamic melodic movement characteristic of Korean traditional music. In addition, various instrumental techniques that imitate the timbral qualities of Korean traditional instruments reinforce the Korean sonic atmosphere throughout the cycle.
Second, the work employs repetition and recurrence to create a non-linear musical flow. Through repeated central tones, transformation of melodic motives, ostinato patterns, and heterophonic textures, the music develops a fluidly cyclical sense of motion. These characteristics may be understood in relation to the cyclic temporal structures found in Indonesian gamelan music.
Third, the work demonstrates an aesthetic concern for sonic space and silence, most clearly in Song III. The sonic voids appearing in the latter part of the song may be associated with the Japanese concept of ma (間), while the use of the Hirajōshi scale contributes to a dark and tense sonic atmosphere.
Fourth, modern Western harmonic language plays an important role, particularly in Songs I, II, and V. Polychords, superimposed open fifths, and dissonant sonorities create distinctive harmonic colors and contribute to the work’s overall sonic tension.
Based on the musical analysis, this study proposes performance- practice perspectives including restrained tone production, sustained breath control, the selective use of vibrato and non-vibrato, the realization of sigimsae-influenced melodic gestures, and approaches to text delivery that reflect the sonic flow of language. These strategies are intended to facilitate an effective realization of both the musical characteristics and the poetic expression of the work.
This research provides a methodological framework for contemporary vocal repertoire by integrating analytical and performance-oriented approaches to 〈Cycle of Love, 1981〉. Furthermore, it may serve as a foundation for future studies of Anne Boyd’s vocal works, contemporary Australian art song, and broader issues concerning the fusion and transformation of diverse musical cultures.
