Recent animated films increasingly tend to develop as series sustained across multiple texts, rather than remaining within the self-contained form of individual works. In animated film series, narrative continuity is not maintained merely by the reappearance of the same characters and settings. Visual signs repeated and varied across works evoke memories of previous texts while acquiring new meanings within new events and relationships. In this regard, visual signs constitute an important object of analysis for understanding narrative development and meaning formation in animated film series. Accordingly, this study examines the Zootopia series and investigates how the visual signs appearing in the works perform narrative functions.
This study is theoretically grounded in Seymour Chatman’s narrative theory, Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotics, and the theory of intertextuality. Chatman’s narrative theory is employed to analyze how visual signs are involved in plot development, character formation, the organization of spatial order, and the viewer’s process of comprehension, based on the distinction between story and discourse. Peirce’s semiotics is applied as a framework for explaining the signification and functional differences of visual signs through the categories of icon, index, and symbol. The theory of intertextuality is used to examine how visual signs are repeated, echoed, varied, and rearranged in relation to texts both within and beyond the series. As its research method, this study adopts qualitative textual analysis. Focusing on character forms, clue-bearing props, spatial markers, institutional images, and screen media appearing in the Zootopia series, it analyzes the types, signification, narrative functions, and intertextual narrative functions of visual signs.
The findings show that visual signs in the Zootopia series do not function merely as decorative elements composing the screen, but operate as functional devices that directly participate in narrative development and meaning formation. First, visual signs generate meaning through the modes of icon, index, and symbol, thereby enabling character identification, the organization of clues, and the condensation of symbolic meaning. Elements such as character appearance, the arrangement of urban space, and institutional markers do not remain as independent images; rather, they function as semiotic objects that produce meaning within the work and guide the viewer’s interpretation. Second, at the level of events, visual signs perform functions such as establishing foreshadowing, triggering incidents, shaping turning points, and presenting information. At the level of characters and spatial relations, they organize character identity, relational structures, and urban order. At the level of discourse, they regulate the viewer’s gaze and process of comprehension through the arrangement of shots, composition, and visual rhythm. Third, from the intertextual perspective of the series, visual signs form continuity of meaning through repetition and correspondence between earlier and later texts, while generating new meanings through variation and rearrangement. Character motifs, scene motifs, and plot-related signs evoke the meanings of previous works while being recontextualized within subsequent texts. In addition, the visual appropriation and transformation of animal fables, the detective genre, and the tradition of urban narratives contribute to expanding the semantic scope of the Zootopia series.
The discussion demonstrates that, in the animated Zootopia series, visual signs go beyond visual expression or artistic devices and perform multilayered narrative functions, ranging from the connection and development of events to the organization of character relationships and spatial order, the guidance of viewer comprehension, and the formation of semantic relationships between works. In particular, visual signs operate as clues and foreshadowing within narrative progression, visualize the relationships between characters and the world, and construct the continuity and expandability of serial narrative through repetition, variation, and rearrangement across earlier and later texts. In this sense, the visual signs of the Zootopia series can be understood not as decorative elements external to narrative, but as functional devices that organize both meaning generation and narrative structure. By examining the signification, narrative functions, and intertextual expansion of meaning in visual signs, this study also proposes an analytical approach applicable to the study of visual signs in animated film series. Future research should expand the scope of analysis to include diverse animated film series, cross-media texts, and viewers’ interpretive processes, thereby examining the narrative functions of visual signs in a more multilayered way.
