This study examines the transformation of André Jolivet’s (1905–1974) vocal idiom during the Second World War, focusing on his wartime vocal works Les Trois Complaintes du soldat (1940) and Poèmes intimes (1942–1944). Jolivet has often been regarded as a composer who developed a distinctive magical and sound-centered aesthetic in French modern music of the 1930s through the materiality of sound, repetitive rhythm, non-functional harmony, and the organization of ritual energy. After the fall of France in 1940, his military service, and his experience at the Battle of Gien, however, a new direction emerged in his vocal works, one that differs from the abstract sound experiments of his earlier period. This study interprets this change not as a weakening of avant-garde language or a return to traditional lyricism, but as a process in which the center of musical organization was reconfigured from sound to utterance within the historical reality of war.
To this end, this study examines the historical context of French wartime vocal music and Jolivet’s aesthetic transformation, and analyzes the text–music relationship in the two works with particular attention to utterance structure, melody, rhythm, tonal centers, and piano texture. Les Trois Complaintes du soldat reveals the process by which wartime experience is directly verbalized and musicalized. Through a three-stage utterance structure—the defeated soldier’s self-declaration, dialogic address to family and community, and testimonial prayer to God—the work transforms the suffering of war into communal recovery and religious return. Repeated phrases, transformed refrains, shifting tonal centers, and the responsive structure between voice and piano function as central devices that organize wartime experience not as simple narrative, but as performative and communal utterance.
By contrast, Poèmes intimes removes direct representations of war and centers instead on an inner awareness of existence formed through the relationship between “I” and “you.” The work constructs a gradual utterance structure that moves from the sensing of existence, mutual discovery, and union to distance and non-sharing, finally arriving at an identification of being beyond language. Silence, suspension, vocalise, shifts in tonal center, and the continuity of final chords musically organize emotions that cannot be fully spoken and the subtle affective changes between beings. Voice and piano, moreover, function as a sonic structure that forms inner time and the resonance of emotion. Taken together, Jolivet’s wartime vocal works both employ utterance structure as a central principle of musical formation, yet they unfold in different directions. Whereas Les Trois Complaintes du soldat organizes communal recovery and religious return through performative and dramatic utterance directed toward the external world, Poèmes intimes reaches the sensing and identification of existence through meditative utterance that explores silence and inner states. The former realizes dramatic tension and collective energy through repeated rhythms, strong accents, returning refrains, and cumulative sonic expansion, while the latter organizes inner time and non-verbal resonance through long-breathed melodic lines, floating sonorities, repetition and return, hemiola, and vocalise.
This study explains the transformation of Jolivet’s wartime vocal idiom through the concept of “necessary simplicity.” Here, simplicity does not signify a decline of avant-garde experimentation or a retreat into traditional lyricism. Rather, it is the structural result of a shift in musical organization from sound itself to human utterance and the communication of meaning. The clear melodic lines, restricted sonic materials, stable tonal centers, phrase-based vocal writing, and close integration of voice and piano in these wartime works are all compositional strategies chosen to place the human voice at the center of the work. Jolivet’s wartime vocal works, therefore, should not be regarded as peripheral products within his musical aesthetics. Rather, they constitute important examples in which sound-centered modernism was reconfigured through the human voice and utterance structure, transforming the experience of war into artistic form and human meaning.
