This dissertation aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the linguistic characteristics of Celan’s poetry and the compositional idiom of Aribert Reimann in his song cycle 〈Fünf Gedichte von Paul Celan〉 (1959–1960), with particular focus on the correlation between the linguistic fragmentation of the poems and the twelve-tone technique. Reimann reveals an expressionistic compositional tendency through the use of twelve-tone technique. By means of discontinuous melodic progression, extreme use of register, and maximized dissonance, he musically realizes the characteristics of Celan’s poetry, which contains the tragedy of the Holocaust and inscribed memory. In this dissertation, these poetic characteristics are analyzed in terms of the linguistic techniques of fragmentation and semantic compression, as well as the thematic aspects of silence and absence, the repetition of memory, and the deepening and climax of suffering.
The results of this dissertation are as follows. First, Reimann transforms the fragmented language of Celan’s poetry into breaks in the vocal line, segmented sonorities in the piano part, rests, ostinatos, and incomplete tone rows. Second, the semantic compression of poetic language is expressed through specific intervals, repeated melodies, melismas, abrupt leaps, and the completion or omission of twelve-tone rows. Third, silence and absence, as thematic characteristics of the poems, are embodied through rests, stillness, pp sonorities, unaccompanied passages, omitted pitches, incomplete tone rows, and the lingering space of postludes. Fourth, the repetition of memory is musically organized through ostinatos, repeated melodies, central pitches, repeated chords, the transposition and expansion of tone rows, and palindromic structures. Fifth, the climax of suffering is realized through strong dynamics such as f or ff, high register, abrupt leaps, tone clusters, the intensification of dissonance, the completion of twelve-tone rows, and the expansion of register.
Through this analysis, this dissertation confirms that 〈Fünf Gedichte von Paul Celan〉 is a work that transforms the linguistic fragmentation and process of meaning formation in Celan’s poetry into structural principles of music. Reimann dismantles the lyrical melodic continuity, regular breathing structure, clear cadential orientation, and accompaniment-based function of the piano found in traditional art song. Instead, he forms a text-centered modern vocal language through discontinuous vocal melodies, an autonomous piano part, the structural use of rhythm and rests, and the contrast between complete and incomplete tone rows.
Therefore, this dissertation demonstrates that Reimann reconstructs the structure and process of meaning formation in Celan’s poetry within musical form and sonic organization. In this respect, 〈Fünf Gedichte von Paul Celan〉 may be regarded as an important work that reveals the interaction between language and music in postwar German modern vocal music. This dissertation also provides an analytical foundation for examining the ways in which the structure of poetic language, in combination with the twelve-tone technique, is transformed into musical structure and sonority.
