This study purposed to investigate and explore the structure and intrinsic meaning of practical dance instructors' experiences of vocational continuity, as well as the psychological and social driving forces behind their persistence amidst the crises of job insecurity and role tension.
Three problems were established for this study, and a phenomenological research method was applied to clarify their significance. First, what is the structure of the career continuity experience of practical dance instructors? Second, what is the essential meaning of the career continuity experience for practical dance instructors? Third, what are the psychological and social driving forces that enable practical dance instructors to continue their careers amidst the crisis of job insecurity and role tension? The study participants were limited to graduates majoring in practical dance who received professional education at a four-year university through purposive sampling. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with a total of 8 practical dance instructors who have more than 3 years of teaching experience and are active as instructors in the metropolitan area. The interviews were conducted for an average duration of 70 minutes. The collected data was analyzed by examining the participants' experiences according to the analysis procedure of Giorgi's phenomenological research method. After recognizing the entire content, semantic units were extracted, and the central meaning was extracted by comparing and analyzing the semantic units. The process of converting the extracted central meanings into academic terms and integrating them into subcategories was carried out structurally. Subsequently, it was integrated into a general structural description, and the analyzed research results yielded 20 central meanings, 9 subcategories, and finally 4 themes: 〈!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --〉〈Instability of the occupational structure amidst absence institutional protection〉, 〈!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --〉〈Psychological overload resulting from conflicts in performing multiple roles and the expansion of job scope〉, 〈!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --〉〈Strengthening intrinsic persistence motivation through emotional interaction with learners〉, 〈!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --〉〈Enhancing professional competence for survival and building a support system〉. Initially, the study aimed to explore the topic with a focus on ‘job experience,’ but during the data analysis process, it was confirmed that a common experience in the participants’ statements was related to ‘job continuation experience’. Accordingly, the analysis was restructured by shifting the theme of this study to ‘experience of sustaining career’.
Based on the results of this study, the conclusions are as follows. First, the structure of practical dance instructors' career continuity experiences revealed a cyclical structure characterized by repeated cycles of burnout and recovery. Rather than a linear structure where they strive toward a goal, they live in an infinite cycle where they contemplate quitting due to financial difficulties but are compelled to return to the profession by their learners, this involves experiencing a structure of infinite repetition of conflict and healing. While they experience depression or slumps after classes, they also feel the energy and joy exchanged with learners through the lessons, thereby experiencing a structure of healing cycles. Although choreography is composed for longer than the class time and a significant amount of time is invested in designing programs due to working at multiple educational institutions, there is generally no compensation for this invisible labor. This invisible labor makes it impossible to separate work and life, forming a structure where daily life is directly linked to work. Second, the essential meaning revealed in the professional persistence experiences of practical dance instructors was that continuing the profession was not merely about continuing work, but a struggle to prove the significance of their existence as educators amidst harsh conditions. Although they are in state of material deprivation due to wages that have remained unchanged for 10 years in the industry, the emotional income they receive from learners, such as handwritten letters or seeing their growth, fills that void. In other words, the essential meaning emerged as psychological self-reliance driven by intrinsic fulfillment rather than external rewards, leading to the pursuit of survival through self-development. Finally, the psychological driving force enabling practical dance instructors to persevere amidst the crisis of job insecurity and role tension is a sense of responsibility and calling. The desperate sense of responsibility that constantly lingers in their minds at the moment they contemplate quitting is the most significant psychological driving force. The formation of emotional rapport with learners who trust and follow them has served as the fuel that extends the lifespan of their profession. Furthermore, the social driving force enabling practical dance instructors to continue amidst this crisis is the process of strategic settlement aimed at entering the accredited institutional sphere. They seek a stable exit by escaping the unstable private market and entering the accredited system of the university. This can be described as a clever survival strategy to grow into a social position where one can demonstrate their professional skills and abilities, rather than fearing the lifespan of a job that is considered to be 10 years, by becoming an educational expert such as a professor at a higher level to stably guide learners for a lifetime.
Based on the results of this study, its significance is as follows. First, while research on career continuity experiences has been conducted in various occupational groups such as childcare teachers, announcers, professional dancers, cabin crew, lifelong education instructors, and equestrian instructors, no research has been conducted on practical dance instructors. This study aimed to phenomenologically elucidate the significance of practical dance instructors' experiences of continuing their careers. It is significant in that it analyzed and described the phenomenon of seeking to continue the profession of practical dance instructor through the vivid voices of the participants. Second, this study found that one can sustain a career through various experiences, such as the re-recognition of one’s identity as an educator, a sense of calling, and the formation of academic capital. The profession of a practical dance instructor is formed through a diverse and complex process, rather than being sustained simply by an individual’s passion or aptitude. This has academic value in that it theoretically suggests the possibility of perpetuating the career lifespan. Third, the identity of some participants in this study is not a single identity but an identity formed from multiple occupations, and is understood within the context of multiple occupations. It appeared as a process of transforming one’s artistic values into educational values, actively reconstucting the identity of an educator from a confused sense of identity. This study is significant in that it reveals the process of reconstructing one’s identity as an educator by re-recognizing the shortcomings of education, rather than overload or confusion of identity.
The implications of this study are as follows. First, they sought to establish themselves as socially recognized professionals within an unstable structure. It can be seen as defining the essence of experience as an active subject that expands its own legitimacy as a professional. It suggests a strategy to survive in its own through strategic settlement in an unstable employment structure. Next, this study is a process of converting one’s artistic values into educational values to reconstruct an active identity as an educator from a confused identity. This suggests that the identity of the educator is evolving from that of an artist into a sustainable profession. Finally, in this study, instructors working as freelancers felt a sense of isolation. This indicates the need for various network building and measures to revitalize a stable community.
In conclusion, this study revealed the essential meaning and structure of vocational continuity for practical dance instructors, as well as the psychological and social driving forces that enable them to sustain their careers amidst the crisis of employment instability and role tension. This contributes to expanding the academic foundation of the practical dance education profession.
