This study examines Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s (b. 1980) song cycle The Glory Tree, focusing on how the performative discourse structures of Old English texts are reconstructed within the musical temporality and expressive language of a modern chamber vocal work. The cycle is based on excerpts from several Old English sources, including The Dream of the Rood, The Old English Rune Poem, The Seafarer, Soul and Body, and Judith. Through soprano and chamber ensemble, it transforms Old English modes of invocation, testimony, transformation, pilgrimage, and interrogation into a modern vocal idiom.
Old English literature emerged at the intersection of Germanic oral tradition and Christian textual culture, and its language and poetic forms emphasize not only the transmission of meaning but also the performative force of utterance. Meter, alliteration, and repetition create the auditory order of the text, while visionary narrative and eschatological interrogation position the speaker and listener within relationships of testimony, response, and judgment. In particular, opening formulas such as “Hwæt!,” first-person testimony beginning with “Ic …,” and interrogative structures that demand ethical responsibility reveal Old English texts as performative discourse that calls the listener into the field of utterance. From this perspective, this study interprets The Glory Tree not merely as a musical setting of individual Old English texts, but as a process in which the discourse structures of Old English literature are reorganized within a modern vocal work.
The analysis shows that The Glory Tree does not simply juxtapose independent Old English texts, but forms an integrated ritual structure that proceeds from the opening of vision, through the transformation of natural signs, the crossing of suffering, the guidance of hope, and finally to eschatological interrogation. The vision and testimony based on The Dream of the Rood are transformed into a state of ritual listening through the repetition of “Hwæt!,” registral expansion, and resonance-centered sonorities. The “hail” and “sun” from The Old English Rune Poem respectively mediate the transformation of material states and the recovery of direction, while the suffering and wandering of The Seafarer expand into a process of spiritual pilgrimage through restrained sonorities and silence after the climax. Furthermore, the images of interrogation and punishment in Soul and Body and Judith converge toward ethical pressure and post-judgment silence through repeated notes, wide leaps, and colliding instrumental sonorities.
This structure is combined with the composer’s shamanic threefold journey of ascent, crossing, and descent, thereby transforming the Old English poetic structures of invocation, testimony, and interrogation into the governing principle of the work’s musical progression. The soprano does not represent a single fixed character, but performs multiple discursive functions as visionary, witness, observer, pilgrim, and interrogator. The instrumental ensemble, in turn, functions as a structural partner that shapes the ritual space and psychological temporality in which the vocal utterance is situated.
The significance of this study lies in establishing the performative discourse structures of Old English literature as a central criterion for the analysis of a modern vocal work, and in interpreting The Glory Tree as an integrated ritual structure that unfolds through vision, transformation, suffering, guidance, and interrogation. By analyzing the relationship between the vocal line and instrumental ensemble not as a simple reflection of textual meaning, but as an interaction between discursive function and sonic space, this study clarifies how the literary legacy of Old English is realized as a new vocal and sonic order within twenty-first-century British art song.

(The Dream of the Rood)」, 「룬 시(The Old English Rune Poem)」, 「항해자(The Seafarer)」, 「영혼과 육체(Soul and Body)」, 「유딧(Judith)」 등 여러 고대 영어 문헌에서 발췌한 텍스트를 바탕으로 구성되며, 소프라노와 실내악 앙상블을 통해 고대 영어의 호명, 증언, 변형, 순례, 심문 구조를 현대적 성악 어법으로 전환한다.
