This study examines the mechanisms of power and discipline in cyberspace through a case study of The Matrix (1999), with particular attention to how the film’s virtual space reflects and condenses the power structures operating in contemporary digital society. Rather than treating cyberspace as a neutral technological background or reading The Matrix merely as a philosophical allegory of reality and illusion, this thesis approaches the Matrix as a structured space in which bodies are trained, perception is regulated, visibility is distributed, and action is guided. In this sense, the cyberspace represented in the film is analyzed not only as a fictional virtual environment but also as a cinematic model that resonates with the cyberspaces of contemporary society.
The study is grounded in Michel Foucault’s concepts of disciplinary power, panopticism, and governmentality. These three concepts provide the main theoretical framework for understanding how power operates in cyberspace. Disciplinary power explains how bodies are trained, corrected, and standardized through repeated exercises and simulations. Panopticism clarifies how surveillance works through asymmetric visibility, uncertain observation, and the internalization of exposure. Governmentality helps reveal how subjects are guided not only by prohibition or coercion but also by choice, responsibility, and the language of freedom. Through this framework, the thesis explores how cyberspace functions as a space where power is not simply imposed from above but organized through interfaces, routes, thresholds, and procedures that shape the subject’s possible actions.
This thesis addresses two research questions. First, how does power in cyberspace form a structure of control. Second, how do the mechanisms of power and discipline in the cyberspace of The Matrix operate and become visible through audiovisual forms. To answer these questions, the study combines theoretical analysis with scene-based textual analysis. Major scenes such as the dojo training program, the jump simulation, the appearance and pursuit of Agents, the red-pill and blue-pill sequence, telephone exits, and key escape scenes are examined in detail. The analysis focuses on spatial arrangement, bodily movement, framing, color contrast, interface imagery, scene rhythm, and the narrative organization of thresholds and routes.
The findings of the study can be summarized in three points. First, the cyberspace of The Matrix is presented as a disciplinary environment in which the body is repeatedly trained, corrected, and reorganized. Training programs and combat simulations do not simply function as narrative stages of growth. They visualize the process through which power enters the body, exposes deviation, and transforms bodily movement into something measurable, adjustable, and repeatable. Second, the film constructs a panoptic surveillance structure through system agents, monitoring interfaces, embedded screens, and unstable visibility relations. Surveillance in the Matrix does not rely only on fixed observation. It also operates through mobile agents, interface-based tracking, and conditions in which subjects cannot fully know when and from where they are being watched. As a result, surveillance becomes effective not only as external detection but also as self-restraint and preventive adjustment. Third, the film shows that governmentality in cyberspace works through the organization of choice and movement. The red-pill and blue-pill scene, access and disconnection procedures, and route-dependent escape structures reveal that subjects are not simply forced to obey. Instead, they are placed within pre-arranged conditions in which limited paths are experienced as personal decisions. In this way, freedom is not abolished but reformulated as a technique of guidance.
The significance of this study lies in three contributions. Theoretically, it reinterprets The Matrix not only as a philosophical or visual text but as a structured model of cyberspatial power. Analytically, it demonstrates that Foucault’s concepts of disciplinary power, panopticism, and governmentality can be effectively connected to detailed scene analysis in film studies. Practically, it suggests that the cyberspace represented in The Matrix offers a useful framework for reflecting on contemporary digital society, where surveillance, interface control, route regulation, and the discourse of freedom continue to shape behavior. At the same time, this study is limited by its focus on a single film text and by its reliance on textual analysis rather than empirical research on actual digital platforms. Future research may expand this framework to other cyberpunk films, platform-based narratives, or comparative studies of digital governance in contemporary visual culture.
