Multi-Temporal InSAR (MTI) is a technique capable of monitoring ground surface deformation over long periods. Among MTI techniques, Persistent Scatterer InSAR (PSI) offers the advantage of providing precise displacement estimates by utilizing scatterers with temporally stable phase characteristics, such as artificial structures. However, conventional PSI assumes a linear deformation velocity over the entire observation period, resulting in poor model fitness for nonlinear deformations that occur abruptly at specific time points. NN-PSI, proposed by Ogushi et al. (2019, 2021), can reconstruct nonlinear deformations without requiring prior information or a predefined deformation model; however, since it employs the entire velocity spectrum for displacement reconstruction, it is susceptible to noise-related velocity components. Moreover, in long-term time series in which deformation-active and stable periods coexist, a single velocity spectrum alone is insufficient to reliably reconstruct the displacement.
This study proposes a time-series InSAR analysis framework capable of reconstructing nonlinear ground deformation without requiring prior information about the study area or assumptions regarding a specific deformation model. The proposed method first defines an effective velocity range, which corresponds to the range in the velocity spectrum where the actual deformation signal is dominant, and uses only this band for displacement reconstruction. This approach reduces the influence of noise-related velocity components that may otherwise be included when using the entire velocity spectrum, enabling stable nonlinear displacement reconstruction. Furthermore, since a global velocity spectrum alone is limited when multiple deformation patterns coexist within a long time series, change point detection is employed to divide the time series into statistically homogeneous segments. The effective velocity range-based reconstruction is then performed independently on each segment, and the segment-wise results are combined to reconstruct the full time-series displacement.
The performance of the proposed method was evaluated using both Monte Carlo simulation-based synthetic data and real satellite data. The simulations were conducted on three representative nonlinear deformation patterns―bilinear, step-like, and exponential―by varying the maximum displacement, deformation-to-total time ratio, and noise level, and the results were compared with those of conventional PSI and NN-PSI. The proposed method effectively suppressed noise-related velocity components while preserving the major displacement components, and stably reconstructed displacement even in long-term time series in which deformation-active and stable periods coexist through change point-based segmentation.
For the real satellite data analysis, Sentinel-1 data were used to analyze the Bugok industrial complex in Dangjin and the Myeongil-dong area in Gangdong-gu, Seoul. In the Bugok industrial complex, nonlinear subsidence signals were observed in the northwestern part of the industrial complex where underground power-cable construction was carried out. Near the launching pit, rapid subsidence exceeding approximately 6 cm was confirmed after the start of construction, and the cross-sectional analysis between the launching and receiving pits revealed localized cumulative subsidence reaching up to approximately 8 cm. In the Myeongil-dong area, nonlinear subsidence signals were observed at two locations within the underground construction section of the Seoul Subway Line 9 extension, both reaching approximately 6 cm of cumulative subsidence. In both study areas, the conventional PSI linear model failed to reconstruct the nonlinear subsidence signals, whereas the proposed method exhibited a spatial distribution consistent with the PSI acceleration model and SBAS results. The time-series displacements at the representative points also showed high agreement with the PSI acceleration model with coefficients of determination ranging from =0.83 to 0.97, confirming that the proposed method can stably reconstruct nonlinear deformation behavior even without a predefined deformation model.
This study is significant in that it presents a methodology for reconstructing nonlinear ground deformation within a PSI-based framework. In particular, the proposed method is expected to be applicable to the monitoring of temporally and spatially localized nonlinear ground deformation, such as that caused by urban construction, industrial complex subsidence, and consolidation of reclaimed lands. Furthermore, since the proposed method does not require a predefined deformation model, it has engineering significance as a generally applicable approach to a wide range of environments where the causes and characteristics of deformation are not known in advance.
