As companion animals are increasingly regarded as family members, participation in tourism and leisure activities with pets has grown significantly. Consequently, pet-accompanying tourism has emerged as an important market segment within the tourism industry. However, unlike general tourism, pet-accompanying travel involves various constraints, including limitations on accommodation and transportation, social perceptions, and concerns related to pets’ health and behavior. These constraints may influence travelers’ perceived risk and behavioral intentions. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of structural, interpersonal, and intrapersonal constraints on perceived risk and to investigate the influence of perceived risk on travel intention in the context of pet-accompanying tourism. In addition, the moderating role of perceived control in the relationship between perceived risk and travel intention was examined.
Data were collected through an online survey of pet owners in Korea, and a total of 200 valid responses were used for analysis. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 22.0, including frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. Hayes’ PROCESS Model was employed to test the moderating effect of perceived control.
The results revealed that structural constraints (β= .248, p < .01), interpersonal constraints (β = .237, p < .01), and intrapersonal constrains (β = .268, p < .01) all had significant positive effects on perceived risk. Among these factors, constraints exerted the strongest influence, indicating that psychological barriers and concerns experienced by travelers play a crucial role in shaping perceived risk. Furthermore, perceived risk had a significant negative effect on travel
intention (β= -.195, p < .01), suggesting that higher levels of perceived risk reduce individuals’ intentions to engage in pet-accompanying travel. The moderation analysis demonstrated that perceived control significantly moderated the relationship between perceived risk and travel intention (β = -.184, p < .05). This finding suggests that perceived control functions not merely as a buffer against the negative effects of risk but also as a psychological boundary condition that influences how travelers respond to perceived risk.
This study contributes to the tourism literature by empirically identifying the relationships among travel constraints, perceived risk, perceived control, and travel intention in the context of pet-accompanying tourism. The findings also provide practical implications for tourism policymakers and service providers by highlighting the importance of developing pet-friendly environments and services that reduce perceived risk and enhance travelers’ sense of control.
