Rhian Samuel (b. 1944) is a contemporary British composer from Wales who has built her own distinctive compositional world by fusing traditional idioms with modern techniques. This study focuses on her song cycle Songs of Earth and Air (1983), analyzing how the vitality and cycles of nature captured by four poets are represented through musical structure and techniques, and proposing concrete vocal performance strategies to realize these on stage.
To this end, based on the trends of late 20th-century British art songs and Samuel’s refined and restrained musical style, the poetic worlds of the four lyricists—Laurie Lee (1914–1997), W. H. Davies (1871–1940), Jon Silkin (1930–1997), and Kenneth Leslie (1892–1974)—who provided the texts, were used as the source for musical representation and analysis. Score analysis revealed that Samuel audibly materializes intangible natural elements through close alternation between voice and piano and spatial acoustic effects. In the first song, “April Rise,” atonal and consonant melodies are combined to represent the dreamy landscape of mist and sunlight, and the pointillistic descending seconds of the piano and the staggered rhythms of graphic notation are interwoven with the vocal line to materialize the synesthetic texture of “liquid sunlight.” This imagery of water continues in the second song, “The Kingfisher,” forming Samuel’s unique “cyclical mechanism.” To depict the mystery of rainbows and habitats, the piano’s preludes and postludes are significantly expanded, while sigh motifs accompanied by portamento in the voice are organically combined with ninth chords and cluster forms of bird motifs in the piano, dramatically contrasting the solitude hidden within the colors of nature.
In the third song, “Snowdrop,” serrated melodic motifs and pervasive seventh- and ninth-interval dissonances reflect the gaze of a botanical observer. In particular, to represent the pause immediately before the stirrings of life, a bold instrumental mechanism is employed, alternating sustained vocal tones with complete silence in the piano, maximizing paradoxical tension. Finally, in the fourth song, “A Warm Rain,” gentle sixth intervals and sound clusters visualize the texture of rain, while the light water and bird motifs from previous songs are transformed into descending quarter-note lines centered on the piano, combined with extreme low-register vocal descent and resonance-suppressed “white voice,” completing the natural process of voluntary dormancy where the earth immerses itself while blocking external distractions.
This study demonstrates that Samuel represents intangible natural imagery such as wind, moisture, and atmospheric pressure through a multi-dimensional combination of voice and piano integrating auditory, visual, and spatial aspects. Furthermore, to faithfully realize these musical representations, practical performance guidelines directly related to the composer’s depiction method are presented, including soft and restrained timbre instead of excessive volume, stable breath support, and the use of “white voice” to express the immersion of the earth. This study holds academic significance in demonstrating the musical completeness and originality of contemporary British art songs, which have been relatively marginalized compared to German Romantic Lieder, based on the composer’s rich domestic foundation in natural poetics.
