Although coating powder catalysts onto electrodes using catalyst inks with binders and conductive additives is widely adopted to achieve high HER activity, binders can block active sites and clog pore networks, thereby hindering electrolyte infiltration and H₂ bubble release; meanwhile, increased interparticle and catalyst–current-collector contact resistance can lead to inefficient charge transport, so the practical performance and durability are often compromised. In addition, noble metals such as Ru and Pt, despite their excellent intrinsic activity, face limited implementation due to high cost and resource constraints, and their uneven distribution or aggregation within the electrode further lowers active-site utilization per loading, sharply reducing cost-to-performance efficiency. Therefore, a rational electrode design strategy is required to minimize binder dependence while maximizing the effect of ultralow noble-metal loadings. In this work, a self-supported electrode was fabricated by converting carbon-paper–direct grown Ni-BDC nanosheets into NiP2 nanosheets via phosphidation, followed by ruthenium loading through electrodeposition. The key objective was to precisely tune the Ru loading - 99 -amount and deposition kinetics to maximize hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance while maintaining a binder-free architecture. By systematically controlling deposition time and current density, the Ru loading could be quantitatively adjusted and its dispersion on NiP2 nanosheets could be modulated. The optimized Ru–NiP2 /CP electrode exhibited reduced overpotentials and favorable Tafel slopes in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Electrochemical impedance analysis further supported improved charge-transfer characteristics at the optimized condition. In addition, long-term durability tests demonstrated minimal performance decay, underscoring the mechanical robustness and operational stability of the self-supported nanosheet architecture. This work provides a practical strategy for designing high-efficiency HER electrodes by coupling nanosheet-derived transition metal phosphides with precisely controllable noble-metal electrodeposition.
