Air Max Back to School

This study examines whether the performance of Nike's digital advertising channels differs according to affiliate versus non-affiliate marketing, reward versus non-reward marketing, and the presence or absence of a reward mechanism within affiliate marketing. Specifically, it first analyzes how channels with affiliate marketing attributes differ from non-affiliate channels across the click, conversion, and sales stages. It then assesses how channels with reward marketing attributes perform relative to non-reward channels along these consumer behavior stages, and finally examines whether differential performance emerges between affiliate channels that incorporate a reward mechanism and those that do not. The study thus seeks to demonstrate that digital advertising channels should not be treated as a single, homogeneous media type, as advertising performance may be shaped differently depending on a channel's operating mode and the way it induces consumer action. The analysis draws on advertising data from Nike's Air Max Back to School campaign, conducted in the Korean market from August to September 2020. A total of 7,723 valid observations were analyzed across four channels: BuzzScreen, GDN, Naver, and KakaoMoment. BuzzScreen generates traffic through an external partner network while also inducing clicks through lock-screen advertising and a reward structure; it was therefore classified as a channel possessing both affiliate and reward marketing attributes. GDN, which displays advertisements through Google's network of partner websites and applications but offers no direct reward to users, was classified as a channel possessing affiliate attributes only. Naver and KakaoMoment, which possess neither attribute under the present data setting, served as the comparison baseline. Multiple regression analysis was employed, and a baseline model and an extended model with interaction terms were used to test cross-channel differences at each performance stage. The results show that, at the click stage, BuzzScreen and Naver outperformed the baseline channel, KakaoMoment, whereas GDN recorded relatively weaker click performance. This indicates that even among channels with affiliate attributes, click-stage performance may vary with the presence of a reward mechanism. At the conversion stage, the interaction analysis revealed that Naver tended to strengthen the path from click to conversion, while GDN weakened it. At the sales stage, conversion exerted a strong positive effect on revenue, yet BuzzScreen, GDN, and Naver all underperformed KakaoMoment in sales, with BuzzScreen showing the largest negative effect. These findings suggest that a reward mechanism can be effective in increasing clicks, but that such clicks do not necessarily translate into purchases. In the within-affiliate comparison, BuzzScreen outperformed GDN at the click stage yet exerted a larger negative effect at the sales stage, pointing to a "traffic–conversion paradox" in which clicks induced by a reward mechanism fail to convert into actual purchasing behavior. The quality of consumer behavior and subsequent performance thus differed even among affiliate channels, depending on whether a reward attribute was present. Theoretically, this study is significant in that it analyzes the performance of affiliate marketing and reward marketing within the consumer behavior stages of click, conversion, and sales. This study compares affiliate and non-affiliate marketing, reward and non-reward marketing, and the difference between reward and non-reward mechanisms within affiliate marketing. Through this comparison, this study shows that the effects of digital advertising channels cannot be explained by a single indicator. In practical terms, this study suggests that firms should not evaluate advertising channels based only on click volume. Firms need to allocate advertising budgets by distinguishing which stage each channel contributes to, such as clicks, conversions, or sales. However, this study uses data from a specific Nike campaign conducted from August to September 2020, so the results are difficult to generalize to all industries and markets. Future research needs to use data from various brands, product categories, and markets, and also consider consumers’ psychological motivations and attitudes.
