Social newcomers in their 20s and 30s are essential individuals required for national economic development, while simultaneously needing to adjust to new environments. However, they face severe confusion, stress, and various challenges due to rapid environmental changes, encounters with new people, and social life. Furthermore, due to adaptation to a new culture, excessive achievement pressure encountered in professional life, pressure and scrutiny from workplace or school seniors, and boredom with repetitive daily routines, social newcomers in their 20s and 30s experience more severe stress than any other group.
The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of drum playing activities on mitigating daily stress among social newcomers in their 20s and 30s who are placed in multifaceted stressful situations, such as adapting to a new environment and experiencing heavy pressure to achieve.
Ten social newcomers in their 20s and 30s with no prior experience in playing the drums were selected as the research participants, and a 14-week stepwise drum playing activity program was implemented. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) was utilized as the research tool, and a paired-samples t-test was conducted on the collected data using SPSS 26.0. Additionally, to identify the psychological mechanisms through which drum playing activities reduce stress, PROCESS Macro Model 4 was utilized to verify the mediating effects of emotional catharsis and a sense of achievement. Post-interview data were also utilized as supplementary evidence for the quantitative results.
The major findings of this study are as follows
First, after participating in the 14-week drum playing activity program, the perceived stress levels of social newcomers decreased with high statistical significance. The analysis revealed that the participants' average stress score decreased by 18.70 points, from 33.10 points in the pre-test to 14.40 points in the post-test ( = 10.416, 〈 .001). This signifies a positive shift from a state of high stress to a normal range.
Second, drum playing activities were found to alleviate stress through a dual pathway consisting of emotional catharsis and a sense of achievement. The results of the mediation analysis indicated that both 'emotional catharsis' through physical striking activities (Effect = -5.2415) and 'a sense of achievement' through rhythm acquisition (Effect = -3.1524) were proven to be significant mediating variables, as their 95% confidence intervals did not include zero.
Third, the psychological mechanisms supporting the validity of the quantitative results were confirmed through post-interviews. Participants reported emotional catharsis, stating, "The act of holding sticks and beating the drums itself made me feel that my accumulated stress was being relieved." Furthermore, the sense of achievement gained in the process of mastering high-difficulty rhythms offset daily helplessness and demonstrated a pattern of transferring into positive energy (Eustress).
This study is significant in that it quantitatively demonstrated that drum playing activities can serve as an effective music therapy intervention method for regulating stress and improving the quality of life among social newcomers. It is anticipated that these findings will be utilized as baseline data for clinical practice and the development of percussion-based programs that consider the specificity of social newcomers in the future.
