The demand for automation in orchard harvesting continues to increase due to the labor-intensive and seasonal nature of harvesting operations. However, conventional ground-based harvesting robots have limitations in efficiently covering large orchard areas because of their limited workspace and the complexity of tree environments. To address these challenges, this study proposes a hybrid orchard harvesting system that combines a Cable-Driven Parallel Robot (CDPR) with a robotic arm, and presents a deployment spot optimization method for covering a large harvesting area with a minimal number of operating spots. The proposed method constructs a Coverage Matrix based on the reachability of the robotic arm and introduces a Direction-aware Force-Feasibility Quality Index (FFQI) to quantitatively evaluate the directional tension stability of the CDPR. By integrating the Coverage Matrix and FFQI into an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) framework, the proposed optimization method selects deployment spots that provide complete harvesting coverage while maintaining favorable tension stability. To validate the proposed approach, a 4-cable CDPR system was developed and evaluated through position-tracking and tension-stability experiments. Experimental results demonstrated a planar RMSE of 0.0163m for a 3 m straight-line trajectory while maintaining all cable tensions within the allowable range. In addition, the average FFQI was measured as 0.271, and the proposed QP-based tension distribution algorithm consistently satisfied the stability criterion throughout most operating conditions. For harvest feasibility evaluation, a ROS2 MoveIt2-based simulation environment was established and tested under orchard scenarios with different levels of obstacle complexity. The results showed that the 4-DOF robotic arm achieved the same 100% coverage as the 3-DOF arm while reducing the required number of deployment spots from 23 to 13, corresponding to a reduction of approximately 43.5%. Furthermore, the overall task success rate in obstacle-rich environments increased from 81% to 85%, demonstrating that the additional degree of freedom expanded the reachable pose space and improved harvesting efficiency. This study presents an integrated deployment spot optimization framework that simultaneously considers robotic-arm reachability and direction-aware tension stability of a CDPR. The effectiveness of the proposed method was validated through both real CDPR hardware experiments and harvesting simulations, demonstrating the potential of CDPR-based harvesting systems for large-scale orchard environments.
